PLL’s first season introduces fans to the liars, their love interests, and families, but the teen TV drama has other great characters who debut later.

While the core characters on Pretty Little Liars are the ones whom fans enjoy watching the most, other characters definitely can’t be ignored as they’re all part of the larger mystery. While several important people are introduced in the first season, from Spencer’s secretive older sister Melissa to all of the liars’ love interests, others become part of this compelling world after season 1.

These characters might get less screentime and be considered side or minor players, but they each move the plot forward or help Ali and her friends understand themselves. The liars often meet new people and their social circle is always expanding, and these characters are the most exciting ones to join the show after the first season.

10 Jake

In season 4, Aria meets Jake, who teaches martial arts and seems like a great contender for her heart.

Dating Ezra affects Aria’s life in a negative way, and if she wasn’t so in love with him, it seems like she would be able to make things work with Jake. He seems like a totally normal person and they meet because she wants to learn self-defense. Jake is also intelligent and perceptive, as after learning about Ezra, he can tell that Ezra and Aria will have a happy ending.

9 Sydney Driscoll

When thinking about who could be A.D., several PLL viewers considered Aria as many of her actions seemed to suggest that she was untrustworthy and scary. Before the huge reveal in the series finale, many people befriend the liars and they turn out to be creepy, and that includes Sydney.

Sydney is a fascinating character introduced after season 1. At first, Emily thinks that she’s a fellow swimmer, and they connect on that level. But it turns out that Sydney has a bigger part to play in the story: Jenna and Sydney were members of Mona’s team earlier on in the show. When Sidney returns in season 7, she’s on the A.D.-Team. No one is sure if they should trust Sydney, which makes her a fun character in the world of Rosewood.

8 Maggie Cutler

Sometimes Aria spies on Ezra in order to gain information or find out things that he’s not telling her, and other times, she’s the one keeping secrets. She learns that Ezra could have a child and she hides it from Ezra.

Maggie appears in the third and fourth seasons, and Aria thinks that Maggie’s son, Malcolm, is also Ezra’s child. The truth is that Ezra isn’t actually Malcolm’s dad. This storyline adds another layer of drama to Ezra and Aria’s relationship, which is already complicated, and while it’s not one of the best ones on the show, Maggie is a fairly interesting character.

7 Wesley Fitzgerald

In season 3, Aria meets Ezra’s younger brother Wesley, who is another great character introduced after the first season as he provides some insight into their family life. Ezra doesn’t share much about his upbringing so Aria is definitely in the dark here.

Wesley creates a lot of conflict for Ezra and Aria during his time in Rosewood. He not only thinks that Maggie and Ezra have a child together, but he even kisses Aria, which is a huge betrayal of his sibling.

6 Yvonne Phillips

Yvonne is a solid addition to the PLL cast, and she and Toby are revealed to be in a serious relationship after the time jump. They even get married, although Yvonne passes away after a car accident, thus giving the romance a tragic ending.

While it’s hard to see Toby committing to someone who isn’t Spencer, it’s hard to dislike Yvonne. She’s smart and sweet and exactly the kind of person that Toby should be if he can’t be with Spencer. Toby and Yvonne are good together and have a healthy, grown-up relationship.

5 Jordan Hobart

While Jordan is a bit of a dull person, and fans don’t get to know him very well, his presence on the show is that of a catalyst to reunite Hanna and Caleb. And for that, viewers can appreciate his introduction in season 6.

It’s hard to support Hanna and Jordan’s plans to get married, as Hanna and Caleb have such a wonderful relationship, and it’s a big relief when Hanna tells Jordan that she can’t go through with it.

4 Andrew Campbell

Andrew first appears in season 3 when he and Spencer are on the Decathlon team together.

Andrew and Aria date in the fifth season, and the liars stop trusting him, thinking that he could actually be A. This ends up not being true, but it’s fun and entertaining to wonder about whether this character is good or evil. Rosewood can be a scary home, as one minute, people seem perfectly normal and nice, and the next, it’s time to question their motives.

3 Liam Greene

Liam appears in the sixth and seventh seasons and he and Aria are both editors at the same company. He wants Aria to get Ezra to keep writing his book, which proves to be difficult since he’s so distraught over Nicole’s disappearance.

Liam and Aria do have a lot in common, and it’s easy to picture them truly committing to each other, but of course, Aria and Ezra were always going to end up together.

2 Nicole Gordon

Nicole is another good character who is introduced after season 1. She disappears while she’s in South America and it seems like she is really gone, and then in a wild moment, she is found alive.

At first, it doesn’t seem like Nicole will play a major part in the show, but then she and Ezra begin a serious relationship. Nicole plays an important role in Ezra and Aria’s love story, as she’s the last major obstacle that they have to get through in order to find each other again. Ezra goes to New York to support Nicole during her recovery, but he and Aria still get married and plan to have a family in the series finale.

1 Alex Drake

Spencer’s horrible twin Alex Drake is introduced in the last episode, and fans learn that she has been here all along, pretending to be her sister and ruining the liars’ lives.

While not everyone is satisfied with this ending, which is fair since series finales can be tricky and they don’t always appeal to every fan, Alex is a dark character who does wrap up the story properly. It’s possible to think about all the previous episodes of Pretty Little Liars and see Alex’s creepy influence everywhere.
