Prime TV Best New Shows & Movies This Week (December 20)

This week Amazon Prime Video is adding a French drama, a biographical drama, and a year in review comedy special. Although many big studios are moving their releases back to movie theaters around the ongoing pandemic, some movies and specials are still releasing directly to streaming. These offer a chance for audiences who prefer the comfort of their own living rooms to crowded holiday movie theaters to catch the latest movies on Amazon’s Prime Video. The service has been stocking up with holiday content for the last month, and now Amazon is rounding out its 2021 offering.

Last week, Amazon Prime added a collection of romantic, dramatic, and comedic holiday movies and series including the five-part series focused on a range of holidays, With Love, alongside more traditional Christmas offerings with Boxing Day, Christmas Is Cancelled, and Joy for Christmas. Amazon also added two older movies to Prime Video. The Theory of Everything stars Eddie Redmayne as the late Stephen Hawking in a biographical romantic comedy based on the book Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Stephen Hawking’s ex-wife, Jane Hawking. The Town is a 2010 crime thriller based on a book by Chuck Hogan and starring Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, and Blake Lively.

Many of the large streaming platforms function on a weekly release cycle, dropping new content on a particular day of the week. However, Amazon’s Prime Video uses a monthly cycle instead. This means that Prime Video releases new additions throughout the month and the week with a slight weighting towards bigger drops on the first day of the month. Their new content usually includes a selection of Amazon Originals, movies and TV series that are arriving on streaming for the first time ever, and some older content that is making its debut on Amazon’s streaming services. Here is everything that Amazon is adding to Prime Video during the week of December 20.

Prime TV Best New Shows & Movies This Week (December 20)

As a sign that 2021 is drawing to a close, there have been an increased number of year-in-review pieces coming out. Amazon is joining the fun by bringing back their successful year-end special from 2020, Yearly Departed. The Amazon Original special is set to become an annual tradition as it features an all-female cast of comedians delivering eulogies for the year that is passing and discussing the things aspects of life that came and went across the past year. The first outing in 2020 was a one-hour release hosted by Phoebe Robinson and featuring a huge cast of comedians including Tiffany Haddish, Patti Harrison, and Sarah Silverman, with a musical performance by Christina Aguilera. For 2021, the no-holes-barred comedy concept returns for another one-hour special “mourning” the loss of 2021. Insecure’s Yvonne Orji hosts, and it will also feature Dulcé Sloan, Chelsea Peretti, and Jane Fonda, with a musical performance by Alessia Cara.

Movies New To Amazon Prime Video

Prime TV Best New Shows & Movies This Week (December 20)

As well as the Amazon Originals and brand-new content listed above, Amazon is adding one older movie this week for Prime Video members to enjoy. On December 23, Amazon will add the 2015 biographical comedy-drama The Big Short. Directed by Adam McKay, The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt. The film tells three stories that take place over the years leading up to the 2007 housing market crash. While the movie deals with complex financial details, star cameos help to explain the premises as they break the fourth wall and describe the necessary information directly to the audience.

Amazon Original TV Series On Prime Video

As well as all of the above new content, Amazon is also releasing weekly episodes of ongoing Amazon Original TV shows. On December 24, Prime Video will add The Wheel of Time season 1 finale, concluding the first season of the fantasy series based on the book series by Robert Jordan. On the same day, The Expanse season 6 episode 3 will release on Amazon Prime Video as Amazon continues to move through season 6 of the show based on the extensive science fiction books by James S. A. Corey. While there are calls for another studio to pick up The Expanse, season 6 is currently expected to be the show’s final season.
