Prometheus 2 Now Titled Alien Covenant According to Ridley Scott

Recently it was announced that Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel was tabled in favor of the second chapter of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus series. Scheduled to start shooting in 2016, the film will see the return of lead actors Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Despite recent claims by Scott about a disconnect between Prometheus and the Alien series, at least for the first few films, his new title not only confirms the link to the series, but also signals Scott’s return to the Alien series in force.

What the movie will be called when it finally released, however, doesn’t quite seem to be fixed down just yet. In a discussion yesterday at the AFI Film Festival, the Alien founding father revealed his sequel, once titled Prometheus 2 and then Alien: Paradise Lost, now goes by the intriguing moniker of Alien: Covenant.

During the discussion with Scott Foundas, as reported by The Playlist, the director explored his seminal series – one which effectively put him on the Hollywood radar and christened one of the most beloved and longest running sci-fi series. He also made known his desire to retain control of the rebooted series, which could stretch on for several sequels, elaborate upon both the Prometheus plotline, and tie back into the original series.

The original Alien and its sequels never really explored the origins of their titular xenomorphic killing machines. Scott’s Prometheus teased at links between the series, but never expanded on those connections until now. At one point, he also insisted the series would avoid from the iconic Geiger creations and their foreboding look—something he’s since backtracked on. Recent revelations by the acclaimed director suggest not only a connection between the two film cycles, but that Alien: Covenant will “[head] back to why and how and when the beast was invented [and] go back into the backdoor of the very first Alien I did 30 years ago.”

Scott’s new title is also intriguingly biblical. Whereas Paradise Lost clearly referred to John Milton’s 16th century epic about the fall of mankind, the new name is provocative in its own right. At the end of Prometheus, protagonists Shaw and David head for “Paradise,” the home world of The Engineers to learn the nature of our creation. Covenant will likely disclose the strange marriage between philosophy, science, and theology which connects the Engineers, humanity, and the xenomorphs which may act as our dark side and the instruments of our demise.

Of course, it’s still early in the game. Since the title has already been revised several times, it may yet change again several times over before filming begins in February of next year. Even though Prometheus met with mixed reviews, watching the Alien series come full circle is enough to whet the appetite of even the most jaded fan.

Alien: Covenant (or whatever it ends up being called) will reach theaters in 2017.
