Pros & Cons Of FFXIV Endwalkers New Sage Job Class

After years of waiting, fans of Final Fantasy XIV will finally have a new healing class to play as in Endwalker: the Sage. The last new Healer job FFXIV players got was the Astrologian in 2015’s Heavensward expansion pack, so they’ve been clamoring for a new one for quite some time. Like any other job or role in the game, Sage comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Depending on the player, taking on a Healer role could be considered a con. Typically a new MMORPG player will begin with a DPS class and branch out to Tank or Healer as they become more comfortable with the game. If someone coming into Final Fantasy XIV hasn’t played a Healer before, labeling the job a pro or con is subjective. Some may be excited to try out a new FFXIV job class, while others may be intimidated. Thankfully, FFXIV does have a special set of instances called the Hall of the Novice that can give new players a crash course in their chosen role.

When stacked up against FFXIV’s other Healing jobs, there are more specific details that can be considered. In Endwalker, Healing jobs are being given an additional classification: Pure Healer and Barrier Healer, whose strengths come more into play with difficult endgame content. Different situations can benefit more from damage mitigation, rather than a large healing spell to patch up some severe damage. FFXIV’s Sage class is considered a Barrier Healer, as is Scholar, but they both still have a combination of traditional heals paired with their shields.

FFXIV’s Sage Is One Of The New Barrier Healers

Against FFXIV’s Scholar, Sage looks undoubtedly more awesome. Scholar’s gear tends to feature a square academic hat with a tassel, which looks a bit dorky alongside Sage’s stylish scientific mage blend. A Scholar book definitely looks bland alongside the floating array of nouliths Sages are armed with. Even Alphinaud will set aside his Arcanist tome to become a Sage in Endwalker.

Players who have been healing as an Astrologian might enjoy trying Sage out too, as FFXIV: Endwalker’s job changes will be overhauling Astrologian into more of a Pure Healer. If they were a fan of sparkling, beautiful barriers, trading starlight and constellations for Sage lasers might be a transition they’d like. Also, Sage will offer something new after about six years of the same three Final Fantasy XIV Healer classes, which alone is an enticing prospect.

Unfortunately, some players expected Sage to be a revolutionary battle healer, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to live up to those expectations. Their skills give them the capability to dish out a little more damage than usual, but if a player loves to crush their enemies with sheer force, this new job might not be enough to satisfy them in the new FFXIV: Endwalker content. Current Healers who try out Sage may notice that there are still similarities to the other healing jobs, although Sage will put together those familiar elements in a creative way. Still, if they were looking forward to an entirely new experience, they may be disappointed.

Until Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker comes out and fans are able to experience the Healer changes alongside new content, it’s a little difficult to say if a Barrier Healer like Sage is more ideal than the others. It might not play as awesome as it looks, or be enough to win over dedicated DPS players. Fans will have to decide whether the long wait for this new Healer job was worth it, but it looks like it will be a great addition to any adventuring party.
