PS3 PSP & PS Vita Stores To Be Closed Soon According To Report

The end could be coming for three PlayStation consoles, as a new report claims that the PlayStation Stores for the PS3, PSP, and PSVita are closing this Summer. If accurate, this means that customers using those consoles will no longer be able to purchase digital content currently available for those systems.

Digital storefronts allow players to purchase new titles online and download them to their systems. This became a common practice during the seventh home console generation, which consisted of the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii. As manufacturers, publishers, and developers move onto new systems, they slowly cut support for online functionality on older ones, such as the recent loss of Nintendo Wii U and 3DS Netflix support. This becomes a bigger concern when it happens for online games and, worse, for entire digital storefronts.

It seems that Sony may be preparing to shut down the online stores for its older consoles, a seemingly inevitable step in the wake of the massive success of the PS5. According to The Gamer, Sony is shutting down the PlayStation Stores for the PS3, PSP, and PSVita as soon as summer 2021. Once those stores have closed, owners of those consoles will no longer be able to buy games or DLC for those systems digitally.

According to the report, Sony is planning to officially announce the discontinuation of the stores later in March. Presumably, the PS3 and PSP stores will shut down on July 2, while the Vita store will shut down on August 27. At the very least, this will give players plenty of time to prepare for the stores’ discontinuation, and it’s likely that there will be massive discounts in final sales for the systems. The writing has been on the wall for this shutdown for a while now. Sony made it impossible to visit the storefronts for those systems outside of the consoles themselves in 2020, in the lead-up to a revamped PlayStation Store for the PS5.

The death of the PS3/PSP/Vita stores will show the dangers of relying on digital storefronts for games. The digital-only titles that were exclusive to those systems might soon be gone forever, outside of emulation and piracy. Microsoft’s approach to backward compatibility with the Xbox systems is one way to fight this, but there’s no guarantee that will continue into the next console generation. The people who have been waiting on purchasing a specific game for any of those PlayStation systems might want to think about doing so soon, once an official announcement regarding the closure of the stores is made.
