Sony can add another bullet point on the list of sales records broken by the PlayStation 5; the system earned the highest launch month in units sold and dollars made for a console in U.S. history. Interestingly, the previous record-holder on this front was yet another Sony console, the PlayStation 4.

A couple of weeks after the PlayStation 5’s mid-November release, Sony announced the new hardware counted as its “biggest console launch ever.” It didn’t take too long for folks to start connecting the dots. Since PlayStation 4 had become the biggest console launch in history, PS5’s eclipsing said success must mean it now takes that particular crown. Unfortunately, news from the hardware manufacturer about PS5’s early successes lacked concrete details concerning specific sales numbers.

While such data remains under wraps, for the time being, there is another new piece of information to glean about the console’s market performance. According to a Twitter thread from NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, “PlayStation 5 achieved the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in U.S. history.” Piscatella’s post further notes that PS4 previously held this specific U.S. sales record.

US NPD HW – PlayStation 5 achieved the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in U.S. history. The records were previously held by the PlayStation 4, which debuted in November 2013.

Interestingly, another tweet in Piscatella’s thread adds that Nintendo Switch still outsold PS5 in the United States in terms of units sold for the month of November. Meanwhile, the new Sony system surpassed Nintendo’s with regards to consumer spending. Such a conundrum is no doubt due to PS5 having a comparatively higher price tag. It’s especially good news for Nintendo since the Switch has been the best-selling console in the U.S. for 24 consecutive months. And the demand for the Switch in other territories does not seem to be slowing either.

Since it’s launch approximately one month ago, PlayStation 5 has struggled with supply constraints the world over. Naturally, part of the problem revolves around the fact that Sony is simply having trouble keeping up with unprecedented demand. But consumers eager to get their hands on the system are also subject to the greed of scalpers who continuously manage to purchase the console in bulk and sell it online for marked-up prices.

Whether or not this will change anytime soon is anyone’s guess at this point. However, some UK retailers have reported that a PlayStation 5 restock isn’t expected until 2021. Needless to say, the short supply isn’t doing anyone any favors, especially with the holidays right around the corner.
