PS5 Hacker Group One Step Closer To Jailbreaking Sony’s Console

Though the PS5 has yet to be completely jail-broken, a hacker group has made significant steps in jailbreaking Sony’s current-generation console.

A PlayStation 5 hacker group recently revealed it is one step closer to jailbreaking Sony’s current-generation console. Jailbreaking consoles is nothing new, but it’s certainly not encouraged by video game companies. Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has filed lawsuits against Switch hackers in the past. Despite the threat of a lawsuit, tech-savvy fans are figuring out ways to expand their gaming experience by jailbreaking consoles.

Hacker groups jailbreak consoles for several reasons. Some hackers aim to jailbreak a console so they can pirate video games. Others hack consoles so they can use the system to play games that would normally be incompatible or to emulate vintage video games. For example, thanks to the jailbreak of a PS4 console, fans of PS1 and PS2 games can now play them on the PS4. S ony’s PlayStation consoles are not backwards-compatible except for the current-generation PlayStation 5. Even so, the PS5 can only process PS4 games, not any games made for older Sony consoles.

Though the PS5 has yet to be completely jail-broken, hacker group fail0verflow made significant steps in jailbreaking Sony’s current-generation console. The hacker group posted a screenshot of what are allegedly the PS5’s root keys – in simpler terms, the unique codes hackers use to decrypt files. With access to these root keys, hackers can attempt to reverse-engineer the console’s software. And if the group can do that, it opens the door to running unapproved code on the console. When another Twitter user asked fail0verflow if Sony could easily rotate the root keys – change the codes to strengthen the security of the console – the group responded, “No.”

No

If Sony is unable to rotate the PS5’s root keys, it seems that the possibility of a jailbroken PS5 is in the near future. Sony was likely aware of the potential hacking issue, as evidenced by Sony removing the PS5’s web browsers. Sony said it had removed the web browsers because it didn’t think it was necessary for the console. There was speculation Sony may have done so to prevent hackers from potentially exploiting the PS5 or protect the console from malicious programs online. However, it was later discovered the PS5 had an internal web browser. The internal web browser allows the PS5 to link to other online services. If the user cancels the log-in, the user would be allowed to freely access the entire internet. In fact, one fan used this hack to run the original Metal Gear on their PS5.

With the hacker group fail0verflow gaining access to the PS5’s root keys, fans of older games might be feeling hopeful for their success. With a jailbroken PS5, emulation of older games could be a very real possibility. However, with Nintendo adding vintage games to Nintendo Switch Online through its recent expansion pack, maybe Sony will follow suit and beat PlayStation 5 jailbreakers to the punch.
