PS5 Mouse & Keyboard Support Options Explained

While the PlayStation 5 has the stellar DualSense controller, some players prefer a mouse and keyboard interface. But is the PS5 mouse and keyboard compatible?

As more reviews begin to pour out for the PS5, consumers are getting a better sense of what peripheries will or won’t work with the console. For instance, while the PS5 will have an internal slot for SSD expansion cards, they won’t be compatible with the system until Sony releases a patch some time in the future. Sony has also confirmed that the PS4 DualShock controllers will work with some PS4 games, but not newer PS5 ones.

When it comes to mouse and keyboard support, the official word from Sony is that they are not supported on the PS5 outside of certain compatible games. However, in a test shown by Failcube, the PS5 did recognize a USB connected keyboard, allowing host Rob Keyes to navigate through menus and type into the search bar. The PS5 did appear to also recognize the connected mouse, but the UI did not respond to attempts to control it with a mouse.

What PS5 Games Work with Mouse and Keyboard?

The DualSense controller is likely the best option for quickly navigating through menus, but the ability to have a keyboard attached for easy typing is a relief. It also means gamers who prefer more precision in twitch shooters like Call of Duty: Warzone will be able to use mouse and keyboard. Thus far, however, only PS4 games have supported mouse and keyboard, and it’s possible no PS5 games will support this control scheme. On their official blog, Sony has stated the reason that the PS4 DualShock doesn’t work with PS5 games is because they “believe that PS5 games should take full advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of the DualSense wireless controller.” Logic would follow that if Sony is blocking games from using their own peripheries, they would also block the use of mouse and keyboard in PS5 games. If this proves true, it could be another knock against PS5 in the console wars.

It’s a bit surprising that the PS5 does not officially support mouse and keyboard, given that the PS4 did, both through USB ports and Bluetooth. The PS5 does have 3 standard USB ports, so the infrastructure appears to be there. It’s possible Sony will change their stance on only promoting the DualSense controller for PlayStation 5 games, but for now, it appears mouse and keyboard is only practical for games of the previous generations.
