Purge 6 Isn’t Officially Moving Forward Yet Says Jason Blum

In a new statement from producer Jason Blum, he confirmed that a Purge 6 isn’t officially moving forward yet. The series took off in 2013 with the release of The Purge, which followed the gory lawlessness of a dystopian society where for one night of the year, all crime is legal. Produced by Blum’s own Blumhouse Productions and directed by James DeMonaco, it was a massive hit amongst thriller fanatics, scoring $89.3 million at the global box office. Since then, The Purge has grown into a successful horror franchise, with 4 more films and a short-lived TV series created in the years following the original movie.

Recent horror flicks have been some of the hardest-hit by the COVID-19 outbreak, and the fifth Purge installment, The Forever Purge, was no exception. Originally, the slasher-thriller was slotted to premiere in summer 2020, but was postponed due to safety concerns. When it was finally released in July 2021, The Forever Purge faced a franchise-low box office performance, grossing just $12.5 million in its opening weekend (in addition to some lukewarm reviews). Initially, Purge creator James DeMonaco said The Forever Purge was supposed to be the final Purge movie after announcing the project back in 2018. However, rumors surrounding a sixth installment started to surface when Blum told reporters he intended to continue the franchise last summer, and that he was working on convincing DeMonaco to continue the story.

While speaking with ComicBook, Blum revealed that The Purge 6 isn’t officially moving forward—yet. The franchise producer claimed he doesn’t have a final answer in regards to whether or not the film will be made, but said “it’s certainly a possibility.” He added that DeMonaco already has a script prepared, and that “it would certainly be fun to do another one.” Blum’s full quote can be read below:

“I don’t have a more solid answer, but I would say it’s certainly a possibility. We’re not for sure doing it, but we’re not for sure not doing it, either. We just haven’t figured it out yet. I do know that [DeMonaco] has a script. I have not read it yet, but I do know James has written a script and it would certainly be fun to do another one.”

For an unconfirmed film, it’s already been a shaky, and albeit, confusing path to production for The Purge 6. There’s been many overlapping reports, with The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year actor, Frank Grillo, claiming he was reprising his role for the sixth Purge. Apparently, there’s been some sort of miscommunication between Blum and the other Purge creators. And with DeMonaco revealing he’d already written a script for a sixth Purge 6 installment, it makes the conflicting reports all the more confusing. However, Blum does appear optimistic that the franchise will continue and certainly seems to have the support of veteran Purge creators.

As of now, the future of The Purge franchise remains in limbo. While it seems likely that a sixth Purge film will come to fruition in the upcoming years, nothing has been confirmed, which might be largely due in part to the rocky pandemic-era box office. However, not all hope is lost for fans of The Purge. While DeMonaco was promoting The Forever Purge, he noted that a sixth film would be heavily dependent upon interest from audiences. Perhaps, if enough fans of the slasher-thriller franchise vocalize their support for a Purge 6, the story just might be able to continue.
