In 2009, THQ, Inc. commissioned a gold-plated Nintendo Wii to be sent to Queen Elizabeth II. Thirteen years later, the royal console surfaced on an auction website.

Goldin Auctions, an online auction site known for sports memorabilia, has come into possession of the Queen’s Nintendo Wii and is offering it to the highest bidder. The Wii was commissioned as part of a promotional push for THQ’s BIG Family Games and the copy of the game sent to Buckingham Palace is included in the lot. Also included are the Wii sensor bar and the necessary AV cables, which are sensibly not gold-plated.

The Golden Wii never actually made it into the Queen’s hands due to Buckingham Palace’s strict policies regarding gifts. Instead, it was sent back to THQ, who made a point of never publicizing that fact, allowing fans to believe that the Queen’s Wii was seeing regular use among the Royal Family. In reality, the machine sat in THQ’s offices until the company ultimately filed for bankruptcy. A few years later, the Wii fell into the hands of a collector, who sold it to Goldin’s consignor.

This is not the first time the Queen’s gold-plated Wii has gone up for auction — last year, owner Donny Fillerup posted a listing for the console on eBay. At the time, the console commanded the extraordinary price of $300,000. At the time of writing, the Goldin auction is sitting at a considerably more modest $2,000, with bidding scheduled to close at 10 PM on May 21.

The golden Wii is a hot-ticket item for a number of collectors. Royal Family enthusiasts will be drawn to a forgotten piece of royal history, while video game collectors will naturally jump at the chance to own a truly unique Nintendo Wii, the only one of its kind in existence. Whoever gets their hands on the console first is expected to pay in the thousands for the luxury of owning a bizarre and storied piece of gaming memorabilia.

Queen Elizabeth II’s gold-plated Nintendo Wii is available for auction at Goldin Auctions’ website. The lot includes the Wii, one gold-plated Wii controller, a copy of BIG Family Games for the Nintendo Wii and all cords and cables necessary for use. Bidding closes on May 21. The lot also includes a letter of provenance from the consignor, certifying the console’s authenticity based on a thorough analysis from a local jeweler.
