Quentin Tarantino’s Toughest Female Characters, Ranked

Quentin Tarantino has made nine movies (that are all mostly violent), and he has introduced some of the toughest females in his films too.

Quentin Tarantino started off his career with a crime movie in Reservoir Dogs, a movie that had no women of note in the cast. However, once Tarantino returned with Pulp Fiction, he began to spotlight women, with the main woman in the movie played by his muse, Uma Thurman. It wasn’t long before Tarantino was filling all his movies with strong female characters.

Tarantino mostly made crime movies early in his career, but soon branched out and made a martial arts revenge movie, a pair of westerns, a war movie, and even an old Wild West movie. Through them all, Tarantino sprinkled in tough female characters, often powerful enough to match up to any man in the movie, and some as deadly as anyone.

10 Broomhilda Von Shaft – Django Unchained (2012)

There are many women in Quentin Tarantino movies that are not tough, despite being memorable. Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction is a great example, although surviving the overdose showed a level of toughness. However, a character tougher than Mia showed up in Django Unchained with Broomhilda Von Shaft.

What made Broomhilda so tough was living for so long in captivity, surviving the abuse from men like Stephen, and living to tell her story at the end when Django finally found her in one of Tarantino’s best westerns.

9 Zoë Bell – Death Proof (2007)

In Death Proof, there were four tough-as-nails girls who stopped the serial killer Stuntman Mike. While it was all four girls who turned the tables on Mike and led him to his demise, it was Zoë Bell who stood out as the toughest of the final girls in the grindhouse movie.

Zoë Bell played herself, and she took part in some intense stunts during the chase scenes with Mike, who was trying to add them to his own kill count. In the end, Mike tried to give up but the women brutally killed him and ended his reign of terror once and for all.

8 Jackie Brown – Jackie Brown (1997)

Jackie Brown was a woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was a flight attendant who smuggled in both money and drugs for her boyfriend Ordell Robbie. That was her biggest mistake, as she ended up arrested and the feds used her to try to bring down Ordell.

However, Jackie Brown was tougher than anyone else in the movie. She played her games, putting one over Ordell, the feds, and even the kindly bail bondsman Max Cherry. In the end, Jackie walked away clean and left everyone in her path devastated.

7 Bridget Von Hammersmark – Inglourious Basterds (2009)

There were two very capable and tough women in Inglourious Basterds. The one who was an actual spy was the lesser of the two, but she was still a tough character who more than held her own in the movie. Taking place during World War II, Bridget was a spy posing as an actress in Nazi Germany.

She showed her toughness during Operation Kino where a shootout occurred. Bridget was shot, but she held her own and ended up killing Wilhelm Wicki and joining forces with Aldo for the final attack. One thing that holds her down is the fact she died during that final attack at the hands of Hans Landa.

6 Gogo Yubari – Kill Bill (2003)

When looking at all the tough women in Kill Bill, it is often easy to overlook one who could stand up to anyone in the movie. That would be Gogo Yubari, the 17-year-old bodyguard in the schoolgirl uniform. The fact she worked as a bodyguard for O-Ren Ishii speaks volumes.

When The Bride showed up at the House of Blue Leaves, she ended up in a fight with the teenage assassin. Gogo held her own and almost killed The Bride, proving her toughness, before eventually falling to The Bride, a woman who remains one of Tarantino’s toughest characters – male or female.

5 Shosanna Dreyfus – Inglourious Basterds (2009)

The toughest woman in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is Shosanna Dreyfus. She had to be tough to live as long as she did. In the movie, she was the young daughter of a Jewish family hiding during World War II. Hans Landa showed up and killed them, but Shosanna escaped.

This came back to haunt Landa later in the movie. Shosanna grew up and became successful, despite losing her family as a child. She owned her own movie theater and was part of the final plan to destroy the Nazi party. She ends up killing actor Frederick Zoller at the expense of her own life, and is instrumental in killing most of the Nazi party’s leaders.

4 O-Ren Ishii – Kill Bill (2003)

One of the best fights in the Kill Bill movies was between Beatrix (The Bride) and O-Ren Ishii. This fight took place in the snow and followed The Bride having to battle her way through countless warriors in the House of Blue Leaves.

O-Ren Ishii was as tough as they come, proving that when she mercilessly killed anyone who dared question her with precision. However, the fight with The Bride showed that Ishii was strong, but not strong enough to win when the chips were down.

3 Daisy Domergue – The Hateful Eight (2015)

Daisy Domergue was the only woman in The Hateful Eight, and she proved to be tougher than almost any man in that movie of despicable men in the post-Civil War United States. She showed up in the movie after bounty hunter John Ruth had captured her.

However, by the end of the movie, most of the men wished they had never met her. While she didn’t kill that many people, she was still responsible for almost every death in the movie thanks to her well-designed plans, before finally dying at the hands of two men who were about to die themselves.

2 Elle Driver – Kill Bill (2003)

Elle Driver spent her time in Kill Bill angry at the fact that she was initially overlooked for Beatrix in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. However, even before that, Elle was deadly and was one of the most vicious members of the group. Elle proved her vindictive attitude when she killed legendary martial arts master Pai Mei, the man who trained her.

She then was part of the massacre of Beatrix’s wedding party, and that made her a target of The Bride when she survived the attack and rose from the grave seeking vengeance. What helps keep her status as a tough Tarantino female character is the surprising plot twist that she was one of the only people The Bride didn’t kill, and she might still be alive to this day.

1 The Bride – Kill Bill (2003)

The toughest female character in any Quentin Tarantino movie, and it isn’t even close, is Beatrix from Kill Bill, also known as The Bride. She was a deadly assassin before the movie started, but she wanted out of that life and found a man to marry. When her entire bridal party was killed, she was too strong to die.

Beatrix rose and set out for vengeance. Along the way, The Bride killed 76 people in the movie alone. She killed two of Tarantino’s toughest women and left another one completely blind. She wouldn’t stop until her mission was completed and she killed the man who ruined her life.
