Raccoon City Sequel Could Give Redfield Iconic RE Game Moment

Writer/director Johannes Roberts teases that a Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sequel could give Chris Redfield an iconic video game moment. Robert has rebooted the Constantin Film-produced franchise based on Capcom’s survival horror series of the same name, taking a more faithful approach than Paul W.S. Anderson’s films and adapting the stories of Resident Evil 1 and 2 into one. The film centers on a group of survivors in the titular Midwestern town as they fight to survive a zombie outbreak seemingly tied to the ominous Umbrella Corporation.

The cast for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City includes Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, Donal Logue as Raccoon Police Department Chief Brian Irons and Neal McDonough as Dr. William Birkin. Development on the reboot began shortly ahead of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’s release, originally with Greg Russo attached to pen the script, though he would later depart and head on to the James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat reboot while 47 Meters Down’s Roberts joined as writer and director. With Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City now in theaters, Roberts is already looking to what the future can hold for the rebooted franchise.

While speaking with ComicBook.com for the film’s release, Roberts discussed potential plans for a Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sequel. In addition to expressing his love for Resident Evil — Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 4, the writer/director says a movie follow-up could adapt one of Chris Redfield’s most iconic game moments. “I’m obsessed with the fourth game. I love Code: Veronica. I mean, it’s a slightly different universe ish. But Resident Evil 7 is terrifying. There’s so much interesting stuff in the Resident Evil world. And we’ve got to have Chris Redfield punching a boulder at some point. So, there’s a lot that I want to put in. You could use the glove.”

The Chris Redfield boulder-punching moment Roberts refers to comes from the final boss battle in Resident Evil 5 against iconic antagonist Albert Wesker in a volcano as he exposes himself to the Uroboros virus. It’s a sequence that has become a running joke amongst Resident Evil fans and seen by many as the moment in which the franchise jumped the shark, with many other video game franchises utilizing the phrase “punched the boulder” to describe a ridiculous turning point. Roberts’ hope to adapt the moment in a Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sequel may come with a mixed response from those who love the video games, as some are likely to appreciate the desire to adapt the highs and lows of the games while others will likely respond with distaste from wanting to leave that in the past.

Audience anticipation for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City has been a mixed-to-positive boat since the first images and trailers began rolling out earlier this year. While the overall production values have been called into question, Resident Evil fans are certainly looking forward to seeing a more faithful approach to the video games and with Roberts teasing plans to adapt Resident Evil — Code: Veronica as part of the next sequel, many are curious what liberties he takes with the first two games and what he keeps true. The wait for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is over as the reboot is now in theaters.
