At Saturday’s Ubisoft Forward stream, the developer revealed newly renamed Rainbow Six Extraction’s story in a cinematic and introduced players to its out-of-this-world story. The first major publisher presentation of E3 2021 has started the four-day event off in earnest, and Rainbow Six Extraction was just one of several Ubisoft heavy-hitters that took the virtual stage.

Having only been recently renamed Rainbow Six Extraction (with Quarantine being its previous subtitle, which Ubisoft changed for obvious reason), little was known about the game before its latest gameplay showing. Outside of murmurs of an alien parasite-driven plot and multiplayer focus building off of the wildly popular Rainbow Six Siege, prospective players had nothing to go on until extended alpha build footage leaked Rainbow Six Extraction gameplay, confirming its PvE focus with all of the Rainbow Six Siege accoutrements that fans have come to expect.

Now, those once-sparse details have been officially revealed and detailed in-depth by Ubisoft. Before showing any gameplay, though, first the game’s story of an alien threat was first revealed in a dramatic cinematic Rainbow Six Extraction trailer starring recognizable Siege operators like Nomad and Hibana – the latter of which is captured during a failed mission. The dramatic event explains the subtitle Extraction, as saving squadmates from the parasitic alien threat is key to the 3-player gameplay loop.

Accompanying the story reveal was a gameplay reveal and deep dive, showing off how Rainbow Six Siege’s winning formula has been adapted into a PvE mission-based shooter. Much like in its mainline inspiration, stealth can be very useful in Rainbow Six Extraction. An example as to why lies in he alien Archaeans’ interconnected Sprawl substance, which coats mission area floors, allowing the slimy foes to move more quickly while acting as an alert system for reckless players who step in it.

Gameplay-wise, Rainbow Six Extraction does indeed look to be the logical gameplay evolution of Siege previously promised by Ubisoft. Lore-wise, however, it’s still a major departure, and it seems that operator’s backstories and relationships with one another will be explored Overwatch hero-style in ways that the competitive shooter original couldn’t. It’s not yet known for sure if all Rainbow Six Siege operators will return to fight the Archaean menace upon Extraction’s launch, but it seems likely given how much the two games seem to share in terms of assets and DNA.

The lid is finally off on Rainbow Six Extraction’s lore and gameplay, and it’s highly likely that Ubisoft will have a lot more to share before the co-op shooter’s 2021 launch. As for how the game might interface and interact with Rainbow Six Siege (potentially a la Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops Cold War), the ball is in the developer’s court.
