After years of unsure and delayed production, the fifth and final installation of the Rambo franchise is just around the corner. Once again, Sylvester Stallone helped write and starred in it, alongside writer Matthew Cirulnick and director Adrian Grunberg.

There were some twists and turns getting here though: Stallone originally thought Rambo V might be a monster movie, maybe a result of a scientific experiment gone wrong. The idea of a ‘passing of the torch’ tale floated around too, but seeing the trailer, it looks like we’re in for another classic John Rambo’s reluctantly heroic missions instead. We’ve watched a few times to see what all we can learn about John Rambo’s next reluctant mission. Rambo V: Last Blood will be released in US theatres in September 2019.

10 Rambo Took Sarah’s Advice

At the end of Rambo (2008), we see a clean and calm Rambo walking down a rural road in the US. The camera pans to a weathered mailbox reading ‘R. Rambo’ and it’s become clear: Rambo has gone home. He followed missionary Sarah Miller’s advice to return to Arizona and see his father. It was, maybe, time for a rest.

In the opening of the trailer for Last Blood, the weathered mailbox returns, and we see Rambo sitting on a porch in clean boots. There are open horizons, not another building for miles. He’s home in Arizona, at least at the beginning of this movie.

9 Sarah Isn’t Around Though

Speaking of Sarah Miller, she must have either remained a missionary in Myanmar or returned to Colorado with her fiancé Michael Burnett. Sarah Miller is one of only three women in the entire Rambo series that we see interacting with Rambo, so she’s immediately significant. In Rambo, she manages to restore his faith in humanity and gives him the strength to hope again.

But she’s not present or mentioned in this trailer. Sarah might have changed Rambo’s life, but it doesn’t seem like the two have remained in touch. Anyone hoping to see Sarah encourage Rambo to fall in love again after Co Bao’s death is going to be disappointed on that front.

8 Rambo’s Been Training Horses

So what has Rambo been doing while settling back into life in the US? Before all the action begins, we only see Rambo doing two things: Sitting on a porch in very clean boots and riding an untamed horse that’s trying to throw him off. Is ranching and training horses his family’s livelihood? Taming something wild does sound like a nice retirement job after a lifetime of kicking butts, but the music playing behind it isn’t uplifting — Rambo might not be happy here.

We’ve seen Rambo steal vehicles of all sorts, but will Rambo V show him riding horses into a fight? That would be an exciting twist for this franchise.

7 But He’s Not Adjusting to Civilian Life Well

Rambo V Last Blood 10 Things We Learned From The New Trailer

Since 18, Rambo hasn’t gotten much of a chance to be a civilian, and it doesn’t seem to agree with him. Thirty seconds into the trailer, he’s seen washing his face and staring into the mirror, looking depressed or anxious.

And maybe it’s because he keeps getting pulled into missions or maybe it’s because he doesn’t know a different way, but Rambo has got quite a stockpile of guns and ammunition in the trailer. Having some makes sense — would Rambo really be Rambo if he gave up all his guns? But the enormous cache he’s been building seems like he’s preparing for some confrontation, whether the threat is real or not.

6 Someone He Loves Has Died

There’s a lot of dialogue about death in the opening of the trailer: “I’ve watched people I’ve loved die. Some fast with a bullet. Some not enough left to bury.” Par for the course in a movie about a soldier who keeps doing deadly missions, right? But in the trailer, Rambo is seen walking by a tree with a few graves underneath it, clearly still in Arizona. One of the graves has fresh flowers at it, and the dirt is freshly turned. Clearly, someone John Rambo loves has died. A member of his adopted family, perhaps? His father? We don’t know who yet, or how that death is going to play into this movie.

5 Rambo’s Not Fighting in Eastern Asia

The first movie in the Rambo franchise, First Blood, was set in Washington state, in a little town called Hope that Rambo is banned from. Since then, all the movies have taken place in East Asia. After a lot of back and forth, it looks like Stallone and the rest of the production team decided to set the movie in North America.

The fight seems to start in Arizona: In the trailer, he’s seen preparing in what looks like his family’s barn. He sharpens a knife and a pitchfork there, before swinging around some farm machinery to make it more deadly. Inside the house, he sets up booby traps to kill attackers. But if the dugout tunnels we see Rambo running through are anything to go by, he’ll be crossing the border into Mexico more than once.

4 He’s Fighting Mexican Drug Cartels

We see him travel to what looks like Mexico City and be surrounded by a hundred guys with guns. Combined with the secret tunnels he runs through, we know that Rambo is fighting at least one Mexican drug cartel. His house on the border in Arizona would be an easy place for him to stage a war with them, after all.

In an excellent continuation of the famous line from the first movie, “They drew first blood,” this trailer proclaims: “He will draw last.” Rambo is heard saying he wants revenge — but what for? Is this still about Washington, somehow? Or did the cartels cause the death of someone he loves?

3 He Might Be Truly Working Alone This Time

While Rambo never becomes a pacifist, he doesn’t really go seeking these fights either. Since the first movie, Rambo has always been reluctant to engage. He has only agreed to help someone else fight a battle when it’s clear there are no other options. But we don’t see anyone ask for his help in this trailer. Colonel Sam Trautman is dead, so the military probably isn’t calling him in. Rambo says, “I want revenge…I want them to know that death is coming.” It sounds like what drew Rambo into this conflict is personal, and he might just be fighting completely alone.

2 He’s Confronting ‘His Past’

Rambo V Last Blood 10 Things We Learned From The New Trailer

The IMDb storyline describes the plot of this movie as, “Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission.” Realistically, he’s probably never lost much of his combat skills in the first place. We see him stockpiling weapons, after all. But in the trailer, Rambo says, “All these years I’ve kept my secrets.” What does that mean? Are there things we still don’t know about his time in Vietnam? How would Vietnam coming back to haunt him in a fight against Mexican cartels? Or is this about Sheriff Teasle, from Washington? Could he have something to do with the cartels? Or are there secrets about his family that we’re going to learn on this Arizona ranch?

1 Everything Is Coming Full Circle

Rambo V Last Blood 10 Things We Learned From The New Trailer

In First Blood, we see Rambo trying to settle back into life in the US after the Vietnam War. He, like many veterans, was treated terribly by US civilians, which exacerbated his PTSD. After the events of First Blood and First Blood: Part Two, Rambo settles abroad, avoiding home.
