Ranked Every Hogwarts House Based On How Much Trouble They Caused

The Hogwarts House Cup is a reward system set in place to monitor the behavior of its students. They set it up like a competition, giving and taking away points for good or bad behavior. That way, the house at the end of the year with the most points will win the glory and bragging rights to the House Cup. Of course, it seems that there is a bit of favoritism when Dumbledore is involved. It was nice that he gave Harry, Ron, Hermione, and even Neville points for saving the Sorcerer‘s Stone and all, but to the rest of the students, these extra points probably came across as a bit unfair.

And not only that, the Gryffindor house seems to have a knack for causing trouble. Most people would guess that Slytherins are the worst in terms of bad behavior, but Gryffindor students tend to be a bit more rebellious whilst the Slytherin house is more prone to acting in a way that best suits their own needs. And where do you Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff fall on this scale? Audiences know that some of them have had rule-breaking streaks, considering a good majority of students from these houses joined Dumbledore’s Army.

So, let’s give the Hogwarts houses an official ranking. The true outcome that the House Cup would have had if the system worked only to reflect the good and bad behaviors of the students of each house like it is supposed to. Here are all the Hogwarts houses ranked according to how much trouble they caused in Hogwarts.

4 Hufflepuff

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Hufflepuff’s are clearly annoyed at the fact that Harry is allowed to enter the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Cedric Diggory had been chosen as the Hogwarts winner before Harry’s unprecedented acceptance into the game. It’s noted in the books that the Hufflepuff students are particularly upset about this because they rarely get recognition at Hogwarts as it is. Plus, it explicitly goes against the rules of the tournament and its long-standing tradition. Cedric‘s entrance into this coveted tournament was their chance to prove that Hufflepuffs have just as much to offer as the other houses.

Points towards the House Cup are given or taken away by Hogwarts professors or prefects. They are given for things as simple as answering a question correctly during class, to a dutifully noted good deed. Hufflepuffs are known for their friendly, honest, and hard-working values. They aren’t particularly competitive, so causing trouble doesn’t really seem to suit their nature.

While the solicitation of the House Cup is put on the back burner after the first couple of books, readers do know that only the Gryffindor and Slytherin houses win the House Cup during Harry’s Hogwarts years. And considering how hard of a hit it is that Cedric‘s glory is taken from him, it stands to reason that Hufflepuff hasn’t won the House Cup in quite a few years. It can be presumed that this is because Hufflepuffs are the wallflowers of Hogwarts that don’t bring any attention (good or bad) to themselves.

3 Slytherin

Slytherin house won the House Cup six years in a row. That shows that not only are they intelligent and resourceful, but they work together as a team in order to achieve their goals. Slytherins and are typically perceived as the bad apples; they tend to march to the beat of their own drum and aren’t afraid to knock down anyone that stands in their way. However, the house of Salazar Slytherin had to have been doing something right in order to win the House Cup all those years in a row. Even with Draco Malfoy’s increasingly terrible shenanigans, their house still remained in the lead and was poised to win the house cup yet again in Harry‘s first year.

Despite their bad reputation, it seems that Slytherins actually don’t cause that much trouble at Hogwarts. Either that or they are just really good at pointing out the flaws of their fellow classmates and getting them into trouble instead. The latter seems more likely, but it’s still a pretty smart tactic to take in order to win the House Cup.

2 Ravenclaw

Ravenclaws, like Hufflepuffs, have not won the House Cup in a few years either. This house is known for their studious regimen as well as their intellect. Because of this, it would seem that Ravenclaws would be racking up house points like crazy by answering questions correctly in class. Points towards the House Cup are also awarded based on who wins Quidditch matches, and it’s mentioned in the books a few times that the Ravenclaw team is pretty decent. They even beat the Gryffindor Quidditch team one year.

Considering that Ravenclaw should have only earned points, that must mean they were breaking the rules somewhere. Luna tells Harry that she is routinely bullied and teased by her peers, presumably those in her own house. So it seems that the Ravenclaw house does have a mean streak, and maybe this is what costs them the House Cup each year. On top of that, Ravenclaw house members are notoriously competitive. So maybe they lost points sneaking into the restricted section or practicing spells they weren’t allowed to use. Whatever the case may be, Ravenclaws seem far more likely to break the rules than either Slytherin or Hufflepuff students.

1 Gryffindor

Gryffindors are known to be the pride of the pack. Even Dumbledore has his bias. During Harry’s years at Hogwarts, Gryffindor is able to win a House Cup or two, thanks in large part to his and his friends’ heroic duties. Despite this, however, Gryffindors are notorious for stirring up trouble.

Gryffindors probably don’t hold much esteem for something as trivial as the House Cup. They are more concerned with solving the problem at hand, even if it means bending the rules. And it’s not just Harry either. His father becomes an unregistered Animagus in order to support his friend and sneaks off into the Shrieking Shack once a month. McGonagall (a former Gryffindor) gives a Harry a broomstick, even though Quidditch is deemed too dangerous for first-years. Even Neville is willing to put up a fight in order to prevent his friends from getting their house into further trouble.

Thankfully, Gryffindor has plenty of smart witches and wizards like Hermione who are able to accrue more house points during class discussions. Plus, the Gryffindor Quidditch team easily earns their house points by winning matches. These are Gryffindor’s only saving graces because their default position tends to go towards causing trouble.
