Ranking The Main Characters From Shrek By Intelligence

The characters in the Shrek franchise are as innumerable as they are diverse — whether in terms of appearance, motivation, morality, or even hilarity. The range of personality traits in the narrative is what makes it engaging so many years after the first movie was released, and is likely the reason it’s potentially receiving a fifth installment in the series.

Taking intelligence into account, however, how would one categorize these characters? Are the heroes necessarily smarter than the villains, simply because they tend to win at the end? Of course not, because that would mean the storyline would conclude way too quickly for anyone to properly enjoy. However, there are different types of intellect to be considered.

10 Prince Charming

First, the good stuff: Prince Charming is attractive. And that’s it. This mama’s boy has no other appreciable features; in fact, he’s mostly composed of negative traits. He’s extremely egotistical, self-centered, and malicious, but he’s also severely lacking in the intelligence department.

In one scene, he thinks he can trick Fiona into believing that he’s Shrek in human form but totally fails to realize that Fiona would catch on to the scam if he didn’t behave like her husband. That atrocious British accent being the first clue, of course.

9 Donkey

Donkey might be extremely excitable and friendly, but there isn’t much to write home about when it comes to his IQ level. His smartness manifests in different ways, mostly emotionally, but his demeanor shows that he is unable to read the room most of the time.

He’s terrified of everything, and his complete lack of self-introspection can be exhausting to his friends. It’s a good thing that Donkey’s life is all about laughter, loyalty, and love, because there’s no way his strategies are going to work (usually).

8 King Harold

Harold isn’t exactly what one might consider inane, but the fact that he makes a deal with the Fair Godmother to assassinate his new son-in-law (thereby granting her son the right to succession), proves that he can be manipulated without a lot of effort.

At the same time, he suspects that his wife, Lillian, would leave him if she ever found out his true form, which is downright nonsense. Besides, he should at least hope that a couple of decades of marriage would have helped.

7 Magic Mirror

Magic Mirror’s intellect is entirely devoted to self-preservation, which implies that he doesn’t have the time or the capacity to spare some for anyone else.

He understands the threat posed towards his existence quite rapidly; not to mention the flair and dramatic skill with which he displays potential brides for Lord Farquaad. And then he becomes little more than a television, set, so it’s anyone’s guess at this point.

6 Shrek

Shrek adores the idea of loneliness, but that’s only because he knows associating with other beings would only cause problems for him. His creativity is best seen during battle, such as when he quickly figures out how to trap Dragon with the help of a shattered blade.

Similarly, he is the one who is responsible for the birth of Mongo, the enormous Gingerbread Man, who pretty much saves the day by storming through the castle gates. On the flip side, Shrek has done some rather silly things in his life, as well.

5 Puss In Boots

Puss in Boots knows exactly how to use his feline wiles to charm his enemies into lowering their guard, which is a truly excellent example of manipulation.

He is completely aware of his strengths and weaknesses, but most importantly, how to use them to his advantage. Puss often places himself between two factions in an argument, successfully moderating and brokering as much of a peace as he possibly can.

4 Lord Farquaad

Lord Farquaad may be too far up his own self-esteem that he tends to be ignorant of most events that do not concern him directly. Further, his personal ambition and cruelty do not take away from his amazing sense of political control — the reason that Duloc is such a well-oiled town is because of Farquaad.

Furthermore, he clearly knows how to maintain his dignity without getting himself injured since he hires Shrek to rescue Fiona (while later claiming to have done it on his own.) The man is hilariously nasty, but he knows how to handle the system.

3 Dragon

It doesn’t matter that Dragon can’t speak any language known to the other characters, but it’s evident that she comprehends them without having to struggle.

This itself is most impressive because it means she’s possibly the only character in the franchise to be “bilingual”. Also, she’s technically the savior of the first movie, having gulped down its primary antagonist. How on earth she came to have lipstick is another question: Does Dragon do her own makeup?

2 Fiona

Fiona is supremely talented, especially when it comes to her battle skills, both at the start of the narrative (when she defeats Robin Hood’s men by herself), and much later, when she instigates a revolution along with her royal compatriots though she’s heavily pregnant at the time.

Fiona pretends to be dignified and hoity-toity, assuming that it’s her best chance of landing a suitable suitor, and she plays this role with incredible inventiveness. Another thing about Fiona is that she’s usually the first person to sniff out if something’s gone wrong.

1 The Fairy Godmother

The Fairy Godmother is, without doubt, the smartest entity in the Shrek franchise. The fact that she uses every ounce of her wits and wisdom to steal the throne of Far, Far Away is irrelevant, as it doesn’t change how much planning, tactics, and underhanded schemes are involved.

The Fairy Godmother is stupendously adept at pretension, without which she would have never been able to get as far as she does. In fact, she is not defeated by being outwitted, but by her son’s idiotic declaration that she’s his “mummy.”
