Ray & Noras Legends Of Tomorrow Exit Was Terrible

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow, season 5, episode 8, “Romeo V. Juliet: Dawn of Justness.”

“Romeo V. Juliet: Dawn of Justness,” the latest episode of Legends of Tomorrow, proved to be completely inadequate as a departure vehicle for the characters of Ray Palmer and Nora Darhk. Ignoring the weak premise at the center of the episode, the script was full of stilted speeches more concerned with deflecting criticism of Ray and Nora leaving the crew of the Waverider than telling a cohesive story.

Legends of Tomorrow fans were stunned and saddened when it was first announced that Ray and Nora would be leaving the series halfway through season 5. Yet nobody seemed to be more upset about the decision than actor Brandon Routh, who had been playing Ray Palmer since 2014. Routh was quick to make it clear that leaving Legends of Tomorrow was not his idea and that he and actress Courtney Ford (who played Norah Darhk) were quite content to stay on the show.

The groundwork for Ray and Nora’s exit was laid out in “Mr. Parker’s Cul-De-Sac,” where the two got married after making peace with Nora’s father, Damien Darhk. During the reception, Darhk took Ray aside and told him that Nora “belongs in the real world” and couldn’t perform her job as a fairy godmother on “that silly little ship of yours.” Knowing how much Nora’s work meant to her led Ray to make the decision, in the opening scene of “Romeo V. Juliet: Dawn of Justness,” to leave the Legends so that he and Nora could build a new life together. As noble as Ray’s intentions might have been, the logic of this decision held water like a mesh bucket given that Nora’s work as a fairy godmother was inherently meant to defy “the real world” and there seems little reason why she couldn’t continue to do her job from a time-traveling ship.

The script for Legends of Tomorrow’s “Romeo V. Juliet: Dawn of Justness” also suggested that Ray and Nora were disappearing forever, despite Nora’s magic and the Waverider’s science offering them ample avenues for paying a visit whenever they want. This was particularly maddening given how Ray described the other Legends as his family, yet acted like he was never going to see any of them again just because he was getting married. Indeed, the lion’s share of the episode was devoted to Ray figuring out how to say goodbye to his best friend, Nate Heywood, despite the fact that they went through this same situation in season 4 when Nate left the Legends to pursue a desk job with the Time Bureau. It is also nonsensical given that this episode also included the return of Mona, who formally left the Legends earlier in the season, yet seemingly has no trouble popping in for the regular meetings of the lady Legends’ book club.

To add insult to injury, it seems the Legends of Tomorrow writers responsible for “Romeo V. Juliet: Dawn of Justness” anticipated the fan response to Ray and Nora’s departure and attempted to mitigate it by giving Ray a number of speeches where he talks about the importance of knowing when to let go and accepting change as a part of life. To Routh’s credit, he weathers this storm like a consummate professional and whatever dissatisfaction he felt with Ray Palmer’s swan song doesn’t show in his performance. Thankfully, the end of the episode leaves their story open enough that there is nothing to stop Ray and Nora from returning someday. Preferably someday soon, for this Shakespeare-themed parting was not “sweet sorrow.”
