Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Richard Linklater had no idea what magic he stumbled into when he brought Dazed and Confused into the world back in 1993. It wasn’t even a modest success at the time; it was an outright failure. But in the intervening years a fervent fandom and cult status have grown around the film, which boasts such young talent as Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Parker Posey – before they got big.

The most dedicated Dazed devotees would assuredly balk at the notion of a remake, but as the thirtieth anniversary approaches, it’s surely an idea that’s been bandied about by film executives. To recapture that coming-of-age purity and joy, it would take a special cast, but this special re-imagining group could just pull it off.

10 Pink: Adrian Blake Enscoe

As the lead of the film, Pink (Jason London) shoulders much of the film’s narrative (or the occasional lack thereof). The mistake here would be to reach for a massive star. Instead, this role should be a star-making one.

That’s where Adrian Blake Enscoe comes in. So far, he’s best known as one of the regular cast members on Dickinson, but that show allows for so much range to be shown from all of its actors. Enscoe could definitely launch into stardom with a role like this, considering he’d nail its many eccentricities.

9 Mitch: Zendaya

A new version of Dazed and Confused would be an excellent way to address platonic friendships between men and women. It’s seen too infrequently on the big screen, after all! Pink’s friend, Mitch (Wiley Wiggins), sees a lot of things just sort of happen to him in the movie.

Zendaya would be a superb choice to elevate that passive sort of characterization. Not only is she a magnetic performer, but she would also be deft at displaying agency that would justify the existence of a remake of this classic comedy.

8 Don: Austin Abrams

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Zendaya’s Euphoria co-star, Austin Abrams (who also starred on Netflix’s Dash & Lily), could enter in perfectly as Don (Sasha Jenson), the older brother-type figure who guides the film to a complicated mix of rebelliousness and genuine affection.

Abrams can display these traits effortlessly. He could pass for older, but not too much older, and he’s certainly capable of balancing sweetness with a sense of sardonic wit. It’s as if he exists purely within the lineage of Jenson’s creation.

7 Jodi: Tahirah Sharif

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

As the older sibling of the reimagined “Mitch” character, Jodi (Michelle Burke) needs to exhibit a sense of responsibility while also being able to cut loose from time to time. This balance, one might notice, was struck well in The Haunting of Bly Manor by Tahirah Sharif.

As Rebecca Jessel, Sharif delivered a performance that was torn between a liberated life and following in the footsteps of responsibility. Jodi displays this on a much smaller scale, but Sharif would still be an underrated pick for the role.

6 Kaye: Olivia Rodrigo

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

The world has been exposed to Olivia Rodrigo in a major way, now that the actress has landed herself a number-one hit on the music charts. Why not capitalize on her rising star by slotting her into a Dazed and Confused double take as Kaye (Christine Harnos)?

It might seem ill-advised, considering Kaye was a checked-out character and Rodrigo maintains a great deal of earnestness. But she’s already paid some dues on Disney+’s impeccable High School Musical series. It’s not hard to imagine Rodrigo as a character who’s ready to be done with high school.

5 Slater: Nathan Fielder

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Slater (Rory Cochrane) has an argument for being the most underrated character in the film. Plus, he’s practically an embodiment of endearing cool and not lecherous-adjacent cool, like Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey).

It naturally makes sense to cast an actor who is equally, if not even cooler than Slater. Obviously, the first one that comes to mind is Nathan Fielder. The host of Nathan for You can certainly pass for younger and he has a bad-boy attitude that is befitting of Slater. Just let him grow out those locks.

4 O’Bannion: Paul Mescal

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Fred O’Bannion (Ben Affleck) in Dazed and Confused may have helped launch the movie’s biggest celebrity. But in the actual context of the story, O’Bannion is probably the biggest dweeb.

This doesn’t mean that Paul Mescal is a dweeb, too. It just means that Mescal has immense range and a Dazed and Confused redux should absolutely look to another rising star (Mescal is going places) to fill the role. Maybe he could even unearth new sides of the character.

3 Mike: Jamal Murray

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Mike (Adam Goldberg) was not the same level of launching pad as O’Bannion, but Goldberg is certainly still famous, even if he’s not quite at Affleck’s level. It’d be too easy to find another rising star like Mescal, though.

Instead, this kind of dance-oriented character calls for some outside-the-box thinking. If the movie were to shoot in the summer (as it likely would), the rosters of NBA teams would be free to take part. Consider Jamal Murray, one of the league’s youngest phenoms. It’s too easy to picture him in Mike’s wardrobe.

2 Wooderson: Saoirse Ronan

Recasting Dazed And Confused (If It Was Made Today)

Believe it or not, it’s been over three years since Lady Bird. That means it’s probably not too likely Saoirse Ronan could plausibly pass as a teenager anymore. But it’s a mistake to make movies without Ronan starring in them, really.

That’s why she deserves the famed part of Wooderson. Ronan would help tone down the character and make it more palatable for the modern era. She’d even inject some gravitas and pathos into the figure, who is slightly too old to be hanging out with these high schoolers. Ronan makes everything better. Heed this.

1 Cynthia: Phoebe Bridgers

Cynthia (Marissa Ribisi) is one of the most laidback characters of the entire 1990s in film, which is saying a lot. She’s the kind of character who seems to have the world figured out and is ready to conquer it at any moment.

Sounds like a role for Phoebe Bridgers if there ever was one. The rock breakout of the music scene in 2020 will likely fall within the lineage of singers-turned-actors who crush it. Plus, Bridgers’ entire persona is built on the notion that she is cooler than everyone. This fits. The whole cast fits. Heed this.
