Who could take on the major roles of the classic movie Beetlejuice if it were made today? Here are 10 modern recasting choices.

In the more than 30 years since Beetlejuice was released, it’s become increasingly clear Tim Burton’s film has made a cultural impact, with fans easily able to quote every line, despite the bizarre, kitschy, horror-comedy being a tremendous risk in the late ’80s. Fans have been enamored by its kooky aesthetic, hilarious ensemble cast, and infectious music for decades, and just like with The Princess Bride, have come to feel it could never be remade.

While a sequel to Beetlejuice has languished in production purgatory for some time now, fans have been keen on speculating just who of today’s stars could attempt to replicate the unique magic and mayhem of the cult classic. While the original film will always hold a special place for fans (and the recently deceased), let’s turn on the juice and see what shakes loose with a new batch of talent! It’s Showtime!

10 Lydia Deetz: Millie Bobby-Brown

Millie Bobby-Brown’s biggest claim to fame so far has been playing Eleven, the supernaturally gifted teen in Stranger Things, the hit sci-fi meets horror series on Netflix that also happens to also star Winona Ryder, the original Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice.

Aside from already appearing in a popular series in the same genre as Beetlejuice, Millie Bobby-Brown has made herself a name by playing intrepid heroines–like Enola Holmes–who aren’t afraid of descriptors like “strange and unusual”, making her a perfect choice for the eccentric, curious, and outspoken Lydia.

9 Adam Maitland: Ryan Reynolds

In the ’80s, Adam Baldwin had a unique advantage over other leading men; he was both handsome and comedic. It’s rare an actor is gifted in both areas, but another name springs to mind in that respect; Ryan Reynolds. With his square jaw and motormouth delivery, he would make a fine Adam Maitland.

Reynolds has recently conveyed the charm and physical comedy necessary for the role in films like Just Friends, Waiting, and of course Deadpool. The latter film required extensive time spent in special effects prosthetics, which would perfectly prepare him for some of the gorier scenes Adam has in Beetlejuice.

8 Barbara Maitland: Emma Stone

Like Geena Davis who played the original Barbara Maitland, Emma Stone has a unique personality and a background in comedy, making her a promising fit for the role. Her chemistry opposite Ryan Reynolds seems like it would be natural, genuine, and full of fun.

Stone has always conveyed a lot of energy and natural dynamism in her roles, whether in breezy satires like Easy A or sentimental dramas like La La Land, ensuring that the sort of manic frequency of the film wouldn’t be too much for her as an actress.

7 Delia Deetz: Anne Hathaway

Ever since her feature film debut in The Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway has proved she can have excellent comedic timing when she wants to, even though she’s primarily known more for her recent dramatic roles. The part of Delia Deetz calls for a melodramatic amalgamation that is both high camp and self-serious poise.

The inimitable Catherine O’Hara made Delia Deetz into a living legend and a walking piece of art, with the acid-tongued critiques she gave her family as devastating as her sculpture choices. Having recently starred as the Grand High Witch in the remake of Roald Dahl’s The Witches, a part made famous by Anjelica Huston, Hathaway has proved she can be funny, fashionable, and formidable, just like Delia.

6 Charles Deetz: Keegan-Michael Key

After spending years as the straight man to Jordan Peele on Key & Peele, as well as in films like Keanu, Keegan-Michael Key has perfected a certain archetype of the sweater-wearing, loafer flaunting, conflict-averse everyman. He even played a similar role in Predator, surrounded by paramilitary characters.

Charles Deetz is known for just wanting to relax in his home and conduct his bird watching, and always being exasperated by the antics of his family. Key would not only do the part justice but find subtle ways to make it even more memorable than Jeffrey Jones did.

5 Otho: Kenan Thompson

Delia Deetz’s friend and occult expert Otho has always been a fan-favorite character, in large part due to Glenn Shadix’s sardonic delivery, and the character’s amazing sense of personal style. Otho is an endlessly entertaining and acerbic part of the film’s plot.

Kenan Thompson has spent decades in improvisational comedy, first in the ’90s on skit-series like All That, and then on more mature sketch series like SNL, where he often impersonated Steve Harvey. He would definitely infuse Otho with the right amount of barely contained contempt and rampant curiosity.

4 Beetlejuice: Sam Rockwell

Sam Rockwell has been having a moment, and for good reason. He’s always been versatile at both drama and comedy, a skill he shares with none other than Michael Keaton himself, who shocked audiences with his highly original portrayal of Beetlejuice after a slew of much tamer comedies in the ’80s.

Fans who have witnessed Rockwell’s goofy but troubled -not to mention Academy-Award-nominated performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, his maverick portrayal of George W. Bush in Vice, and his physically comedic roles in films like Galaxy Quest, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and Jojo Rabbit know that he might just be the sort of underestimated actor to carry off the role.

3 Juno: Judy Davis

Long time film and television star Judy Davis would make an ideal candidate to take over the part of fast-talking, chain-smoking Juno, played so memorably by Sylvia Sydney in the original film, a veteran actress herself of 70 years on stage and screen.

Davis, who most recently appeared as the feisty Nurse Buckett in Ratched on Netflix, would be the perfect spitfire to take the Maitlands through the Afterlife and show them the ropes like Sydney’s battle ax caseworker.

2 Maxie Dean: Giancarlo Esposito

Maxie Dean isn’t in Beetlejuice a great deal, but he’s played to perfection by performer Robert Goulet and is a personal friend of the Deetz’s who knows an opportunity to make money when he sees one. The Deetz’s poltergeist encounter makes him believe in ghosts and dollar signs, and he becomes part of the most hilarious scene in the film; the dinner party.

Giancarlo Esposito has become known for being charmingly sinister while wearing a nice suit, especially in Breaking Bad and The Boys, making him the natural choice to slide into a pinstriped ensemble, with a cigar in his mouth, and hunt for ghosts in the Deetz’s residence.

1 Miss Argentina: Awkwafina

Having made a career out of being a comedian, rapper, and actress, Awkwafina is a trifecta of talent. Her recent work in films like Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians has made her a considerable amount of fans who appreciate her comedic timing.

The part of Miss Argentina, the deceased receptionist in the Afterlife, isn’t a large one but it certainly stands out as an opportunity for a killer cameo. If Awkwafina channels her surly video game sales associate persona from Future Man, the role could prove to be some of her best work.
