As the rumors surrounding Letitia Wright’s exit from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are debunked, the new #RecastTchalla movement gains momentum on social media. For all intents and purposes, Black Panther 2 should stand as one of the most anticipated MCU movies of the next few years. 2018’s Black Panther was an unprecedented hit, and its sequel could continue that streak. However, following the tragic passing of star Chadwick Boseman last year, Black Panther 2 is in a vastly different place. As Marvel has no plans to recast Boseman or recreate him with CGI, writer-director Ryan Coogler had to rewrite the whole film to instead act as the ultimate tribute to the iconic actor.

Black Panther 2 began production this past summer, but it has been beset by several issues. Namely, one of its biggest stars, Letitia Wright, has been courting a fair amount of controversy. The Shuri actress broke out in a big way following the first Black Panther, but due to some anti-vax posts amid the coronavirus pandemic, she has received considerable backlash. Rumors of Wright being uncooperative on the Black Panther 2 set have spread, and there have even been recent reports of her leaving the project due to her vaccination status.

As has been confirmed recently, Wright is not exiting Black Panther 2. Though Marvel hasn’t outright said so, the belief for some time has been that Shuri will take T’Challa’s place as Wakanda’s Black Panther, thereby avoiding the need to recast the part of T’Challa in the light of Boseman’s death. However, following the news that Wright will indeed remain with Black Panther 2, more people are calling on Marvel to #RecastTchalla for the movie. Not everyone is in favor of this, but there are enough speaking about it on social media to get it trending. You can see a sample of people’s reactions down below.

#RecastTchalla because it’s not like Marvel Studios hasn’t recasted an actor before. pic.twitter.com/HlyN7ECpua

#RecastTchalla Absolutely. The world lost a wonderful man in Chadwick Boseman. It needn’t lose T’Challa as well. You’ll continue giving little black boys their royal hero, while also give a chance to a talented black actor to shine.

I’m all for #RecastTchalla. Chadwick was a special man to have played him. Let the role live on for the next black kings pic.twitter.com/z5cNgCHC6s

#RecastTChalla is another example of comic book fans thinking that they know what’s best for the story they’ve been locked into since 2008 like Marvel doesn’t know what they’re doing. They didn’t say there wouldn’t be another T’Challa. They just said they wouldn’t recast.

Why does Hollywood allow problematic actors to remain in roles? Especially when they interfere with production and cause trouble on set? I wasn’t for it before but I am now #RecastTchalla #WakandaForever And I LOVED Chadwick but even he would want the recast. pic.twitter.com/ejOFPK3U1K

chadwick brought a spark and fire to t’challa’s character that cannot be replaced or replicated by another. his charm, his acting, his comforting aura cannot be recasted, and i really don’t get how any of you can be serious about this #RecastTchalla

People who keep saying #RecastTchalla are so disrespectful to Chadwick’s legacy… the difference with Marvel recasting is those actors didn’t pass away!! It makes me sick people are even thinking about recasting T’challa

I’ve said before and I’m sticking with it. If #RecastTchalla happens, I’d want John David Washington. But who knows who would fill that void. But if T’Challa is not recast, I’m fine with that too. I’m fine with whatever going foward. Because I trust Ryan Cooglar. pic.twitter.com/84acKAuhSv

Agreed. Chadwick is gone and we can’t bring him back, but T’Challa can live forever. #RecastTchalla https://t.co/o3qR9jKx9D

As is to be expected with a topic like this one, the #RecastTchalla hashtag is filled with varying opinions. On one side, there are those who believe a great Black character like T’Challa shouldn’t be written off because of Boseman’s passing. Set videos have pointed to Black Panther 2 telling a story where T’Challa has died, so those who wish for his story to continue are calling for the part to be recast. On the other side of the debate are those who think recasting T’Challa would be disrespectful to Boseman’s memory. This isn’t a simple case of an actor exiting the franchise over a pay dispute or creative issues; in this situation, someone beloved died, and there are many fans who believe it’s better to honor Boseman by letting T’Challa’s story end.

It seems likely that whatever Marvel chooses, there will be many disappointed by the outcome. It’s worth pointing out that Black Panther 2 is already several months into production and is currently scheduled to premiere in November 2022. It could be delayed, yes, but that would likely affect the rest of the MCU’s release plan, not to mention cost a great deal to scrap what has already been shot and start over. The fans calling on Black Panther 2 to #RecastTchalla might come from a good place, but it doesn’t seem very likely at the moment that they will get the result they want.
