Red Dead Online Giving Players Free Gold Bars This Weekend

Rockstar Games has some fun news for Red Dead Online, the currently-in-beta online multiplayer portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. Not only is Rockstar granting players that log onto the online mode this upcoming weekend a gift of free gold bars, but it’s also making some meaningful improvements to the relatively new Gun Rush battle royale mode.

While the online mode isn’t yet ready to make the leap out of beta and into full launch, Rockstar continues to iterate on the service and encourage players to keep coming back. According to Rockstar, Red Dead Online’s continued and now long-running beta is what’s driving this weekend’s generous gold giveaway.

“As a token of our gratitude for your support and understanding throughout this Beta period, we are rewarding this weekend’s active players with a bonus of 5 Gold Bars.”

While 5 Gold Bars aren’t likely to get players too far towards any goal, any gift of gold is better than nothing. In order to redeem the gift, all players will have to do is play the Red Dead Online beta between Friday, January 25 and Sunday, January 27. No minimum play time appears to be required. If players qualify, they will receive their bonus gold by January 29, but it must be mentioned that the bonus will not be received immediately.

Regarding the Red Dead Online Gun Rush changes, Rockstar says it has implemented some minor improvements to matchmaking. This has been done in an effort to combat several issues while it works on long-term and permanent fixes:

“The minor improvements should help generate fuller lobbies and we will add more fixes in upcoming title updates. Gun Rush is best experienced with as many competitors as possible, so if you had any issues with smaller lobbies around release, we strongly encourage you to give it another go this weekend as we are already regularly seeing much fuller matches on both PS4 and Xbox One.”

With Gun Rush being a battle royale mode in which up to 32 players battle to the death, filling up a lobby every game is of high importance. Rockstar has noted issues tied to filling up lobbies for Gun Rush for some time now, which explains the rush for temporary fixes while long-term fixes keep moving forward. Rockstar’s hoping returning players check Gun Rush out again this weekend to see the improvements for themselves.

In addition to the free Gold Bar weekend and Gun Rush matchmaking improvements, Rockstar continues forward on several other new features, including proximity-based player blips, parley changes, law and bounty improvements, and daily challenges with gold nugget rewards. These features are planned to be released as part of a major Red Dead Online title update in the “coming months.”

Red Dead Online is playable now through Red Dead Redemption 2, which is available on PS4 and Xbox One.
