Red Dead Redemption 2 Overlooked Concept Art Surfaces Online

Previously unseen concept art for Red Dead Redemption 2 by a former Rockstar designer has been discovered online, giving fans an early look at how certain characters and locations were originally meant to look. The game launched in 2018 and acted as a sequel to the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption. Despite winning praise for its great single-player campaign, the developer has since confirmed that there will be no story DLC for the title in the future.

The lack of proper DLC expansions for Red Dead Redemption 2 is partly due to the success of Red Dead Online. Rockstar has supported the game post-launch with a dedicated online multiplayer mode that is similar to GTA Online. This has led to the studio launching Red Dead Online as a standalone game that is playable without the user needing to own Red Dead Redemption 2. It is currently available for just $4.99 across various platforms, although this price will rise from February 1, 2021.

Previously unknown concept art for Red Dead Redemption 2 has been discovered online by GTAForums user deadasdisco. The artwork is by Daren Bader, a former senior art director at Rockstar, who posted the images to ArtStation several months ago. The concept art includes character models, environments, and story scenes from the campaign. One of the posted images also shows an early look at Arthur Morgan—the main protagonist in the sequel. Many of the filenames for the artwork give an indication of what each of them represents, showing how the artists originally envisioned certain characters and areas.

Recently, players discovered references to Grand Theft Auto 6 in the code for Red Dead Redemption 2. According to dataminers on Reddit who examined the code from the sequel, a number of weapons that are not available in either Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 are located in a certain file. This has led to speculation that these guns might be included in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto title as they would be too modern to be used in the Wild West game.

Although the concept art does not show anything that groundbreaking, it is exciting to see how the designers thought Red Dead Redemption 2 might look during the early stages of development. In particular, seeing how Arthur Morgan and other characters were initially envisioned in interesting, especially when they are compared with their final versions. Hopefully, Rockstar might create an art book to show off even more concept work in the future.
