Red Hood and the Outlaws Team Up With Themselves

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Red Hood and the Outlaws #47

Time travel and magic are pretty awesome, especially when they’re used in ways comic book readers might not expect. In Red Hood and the Outlaws #47 from Scott Lobdell, Paolo Pantalena, Arif Prianto, and Troy Peteri, Jason Todd and his friends are making their last stand against the armies of the Untitled, the Demon Overlord Trigon is on his way, and all hope seems lost. While Red Hood and the Outlaws are ready to go down swinging, they get some unexpected help…from Red Hood and the Outlaws?!

While Red Hood may be the odd one out and the black sheep of the Bat-Family, that doesn’t mean he’s short on friends. Ever since the 2011 New 52 reboot of the DC Universe, Red Hood has had his Outlaws, first with his friends Arsenal and Starfire. Then, when that team disbanded, he made new friends and Outlaws with Bizarro and the Amazonian Artemis. With both teams, Red Hood and his allies were able to hang out, have a good time, forget about their troubled dark pasts, and deliver some much-needed justice wherever they were. The series had grown to be very popular, setting the record for one of DC Comics’ longest-running series that will finally end with its 50th issue coming this October. However, before that happens, the Outlaws are in for the fight of their lives.

Near the end of Red Hood and the Outlaws #47, Jason, Artemis, and their other allies have their backs to the wall, trying to close the Chamber of All so the Untitled can no longer use it. The Chamber itself is a magical realm, containing multiple doors which open to different places in time and space, and the Untitled seek to use the Chamber to release Trigon upon the Earth. While Jason and Artemis try to close the door, Bizarro takes on Trigon, in an epic showdown. Even so, the Untitled are still pouring through, and things look bleak. However, three red arrows shoot into the backs of some Untitled demons about to attack Jason, and new allies arrive on the scene to save the day.

Amazingly, the original Red Hood and the Outlaws appear from the Chamber of All, having been exploring it in the past, arriving to help out the current Outlaws in the present. This includes Arsenal, who had died recently as a result of the Heroes in Crisis, now back in action. Now, with double the Outlaws, they shouldn’t have any trouble handling the rest of the Untitled threat (especially considering the issue ends with Bizarro killing Trigon).

The return of the OG Outlaws is a welcome and awesome surprise, showing that Lobdell is going all out before the end of his run. Will Arsenal stick around? Is Trigon dead for good? Will Jason impart knowledge to his past self and thereby change some of his recent decisions? Who knows, but thankfully fans won’t have to wait too long for the next issue. Red Hood and the Outlaws #48 releases next month, while the latest issue is on shelves now.
