Red Hood Has Finally Given Up Guns For Good (Even Rubber Bullets)

Warning: contains spoilers for Batman: Urban Legends #6!

In the latest issue of Batman: Urban Legends, Jason Todd’s Red Hood decides to give up his guns for a very important reason. While he and Batman had come to an understanding and compromise that he would use rubber bullets while in Gotham, it seems as though Jason won’t be carrying guns at all going forward after their most recent mission together. However, Jason’s choice doesn’t come from any desire to appease Batman and his no-killing rule. Instead, Red Hood’s decision to find new methods of punishing criminals comes from a recent realization.

In previous chapters of the story ‘Cheer’ – from Chip Zdarsky, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Scot Eaton, Julio Ferreira and Oclair Albert – Jason Todd and Batman began individually tracking down a new drug plaguing Gotham’s streets known as cheerdrops. Cheerdrops are essentially the direct opposite of Scarecrow’s fear-toxin, inducing euphoric hallucinations. Naturally, the hallucinations and high risk for overdose saw Jason determined to bring an end to the drug for good, especially after he discovered Tyler, a young boy whose mother was left in a coma after using cheerdrops. However, once he found out that the boy’s father was the supplier, Jason shot and killed him in a rage before he could even think about the fact that he was potentially orphaning Tyler.

Thankfully, Jason’s actions prompted Batman’s involvement, and the pair worked together to stop the drug. Furthermore, the boy’s mother pulled through and began the process of rehabilitation in the story’s final chapter, featured in the new Batman: Urban Legends #6. At the end of the adventure, Jason confesses to Batman his decision to give up using guns going forward, especially after what almost happened with Tyler. The last thing Jason wants to do is create the same dark childhood he lived through for another kid.

Jason continues by saying that his choice isn’t motivated by Batman’s wishes and no-kill rule. Jason still thinks that some people should die, and he still wants to hurt and punish the worst the world has to offer. However, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone else, saying, “Death has a way of rippling out to others.” At the end of the issue, Batman offers Red Hood a new high-tech costume – one with its own batarang-style gadgets as seen in preview art for upcoming series Task Force Z, which will ironically pit Jason against zombie foes who’d be immune to his more lethal methods.

While Jason Todd’s choice isn’t made out of a desire to appease Batman, it does look as though they could end up being closer now. Exposure to the new drug made both realize they badly wanted to reconcile, and gave Jason a deeper understanding of his anger and how he uses it in his crime-fighting. A Red Hood without guns is certainly going to be interesting to see – as will the gadgets and weaponry he chooses to replace his firearms – though if anything, the upcoming Task Force Z is likely to require more, not less, force from the former Robin.
