Red Hood is Finally Proving Hes Batmans Best Student Not The Worst

Warning: spoilers for Future State: Gotham #6 are ahead.

The Future State event from DC Comics may give Red Hood the heroic moment he has always deserved with regards to the Bat-Family. While he initially appeared to have betrayed his family by joining the Magistrate as Peacekeeper Red early on in Future State: Gotham, Red Hood has been working from the inside to overthrow the oppressive regime in Gotham. This has not been an easy task, as it has alienated him from the rest of the Bat-Family, but Future State: Gotham #6 evidences how Jason Todd embodies some of the best values that Batman instilled within him (written by Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver, art by Giannis Milogiannis, letters by ALW’s Troy Peteri).

Red Hood proves his loyalty to the Bat-Family by voluntarily staying behind at the Magistrate, allowing Jace Fox’s Batman to escape to the rest of Gotham’s crew of heroes. In order to foil Warmonger’s plan to force Gotham into violent chaos, Red Hood gives Batman his mask in order to disable the frequency from Warmonger. Initially, Jace refuses to leave, saying that Red Hood should be the one to go and “save [his] family” while he stays behind and fights off Warmonger himself. To this, Jason says, “You know that doesn’t work. They don’t trust me, and if you did somehow stop Warmonger you’d be surrounded by every Magistrate cop in this building. This is where I belong. You belong out there. Gotham needs Batman. My family does, too.”

Red Hood’s reason for staying behind and holding off the Magistrate shows the extent to which he is devoted to the Bat-Family, despite the awful truth of their division in Future State. Moreover, it also highlights his understanding of Batman’s significance in Gotham City, finally setting the record straight on his conflicted relationship with the Caped Crusader’s mantle. While in the past, Red Hood has frequently clashed with Batman, he demonstrates in Future State: Gotham #6 that he believes in the importance that Batman has in trying to make Gotham a better place. The fact that Red Hood is willing to sacrifice himself in order to give both his family and Gotham its best chance at overcoming the Magistrate’s tyranny evidences that Jason Todd is a far better student of Batman than he has been given credit for in the past.

It is heartbreaking to consider the implications of Red Hood’s decision to stay behind at the Magistrate, because of how Jason has continued to put his family’s safety above his own despite them thinking that he is a traitor. The fact that Red Hood is not interested in exonerating himself to his family in Future State: Gotham shows just how far he will go to keep them safe. Though he is known as the black sheep in the Bat-Family, Red Hood finally demonstrates that the tense relationship that he has had in the past with Batman never prevented him from caring deeply about his siblings.

Jason Todd may be pejoratively known as “the worst Robin.” However, Future State has given him the opportunity to prove his smarts in addition to his bravery in confronting the Magistrate, adding to a growing group of Infinite Frontier books that have marked a new beginning for his character in DC Comics. While it is unclear whether they will ever learn the truth of his sacrifice, Future State: Gotham proves that Red Hood truly is the unsung hero of the Bat-Family.
