Red Hood is Teaming up With Bane in the Last Way Fans Expect

Warning: Spoilers for Detective Comics #1043!

In DC Comics, Bane was killed during the devastating A-Day gas attack on Arkham Asylum, but now Red Hood is leading a new team called Task Force Z, and Bane is on the roster! But how is this possible if he’s been a corpse for the past few months? Well, the “Z” kind of gives it away as Bane has become a member of the walking dead, with a few of his equally dead friends joining him!

Revealed on the final page of the second story in Detective Comics #1043, “What The #!$% Is Task Force Z,” by Matthew Rosenberg and Darick Robertson, sees Jason Todd take on a role that fans have never seen him in before: leader of a team of zombies! That’s right, this once dead, but now returned to life vigilante known as Red Hood has been recruited by a secret benefactor to head a team of villains who have left the land of the living for decidedly less green pastures; a task that even he is a bit confused by.

Throwing in with a local journalist to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of dead bodies from the city morgue, Jason gets into a scuffle with a group of baddies who are revealed to be working for the FBI. Taking him into custody, Jason is brought to an undisclosed location and told that he isn’t under arrest but is being set up with a new job instead, one that directly puts him into the path of an undead Bane.

Brought to readers’ attention on the following page, this benefactor has put together a team that’s “dying” to meet Jason, with the full roster of Task Force Z revealed to be consisting of zombie versions of Bane, Man-Bat, Arkham Knight, Sundowner, and Mr. Bloom; a quintet of villains that are as brutal as they are terrifying. But the main draw here is the idea that Red Hood will not only be giving orders to a stacked team of shuffling undead but will also be working hand-in-hand with the man that not only brought Gotham to its knees during Tom King’s “City of Bane” storyline but who also killed the Bat-Family’s heart and soul in the late and great Alfred Pennyworth in the process.

Brutally snapping Alfred’s neck in front of the current Robin, Damian Wayne, during the aforementioned story arc, Bane’s untimely demise during A-Day was a moment that fans didn’t expect to stick for long, to say nothing about the rumors that it wasn’t the real Bane that had died in the first place. But now, with Bane technically back from the dead, Red Hood will be able to boss around a guy that took something dear from him while humiliating Bane in a way that sees him essentially act as Jason’s servant, something an alive and well Bane would absolutely despise.

So while Jason Todd teaming up with a dead Bane is a wild set-up to be sure, the exact nature of what Task Force Z’s purpose is as well as what kind of person Bane will act like now that he’s undead is still as mysterious as ever. Bane and Red Hood have a lot of issues to work out between the two of them, so it’ll be exciting for fans to see where this new series is headed once the first issue of Task Force Z hits store shelves soon.
