Red Hood Needs to Fix His Greatest Weakness (Or Hell Never Beat Robin)

Warning: contains spoilers for Robins #3!

In Robins #3, now available as a digital comic, Damian Wayne points out one of Red Hood’s biggest weaknesses, one that must be addressed if Jason Todd ever hopes to evolve as a crime-fighter. Of all the former Robins, Red Hood is the one most ruled by his emotions and viewed as the most unstable – a quality which has allowed Damian to best him in the past.

Red Hood is Jason Todd, the second Robin. Possessing a far harder edge than his predecessors, his time as the Boy Wonder was controversial with fans – to the point they voted to kill him off in 1988’s Batman #427. Todd was viewed as so toxic a character that he would not return for 17 years, re-emerging as the brutal vigilante Red Hood. In stark contrast to his former mentor, Red Hood used guns and was not above executing evil-doers. In recent years, the relationship between Red Hood and Batman has thawed; Red Hood has forsaken guns and lethal force and subsequently been welcomed back into the Bat-Family. Recently, Red Hood joined the other former Robins (Nightwing, Red Robin, Spoiler and Damian Wayne) in investigating a mysterious villain with a grudge against them. In the previous issue, the team encountered a group of former super-villain sidekicks emulating the likes of the Joker and Poison Ivy, who have received upgrades making them just like their idols.

As Robins #3 – written by Tom Seeley, with art by Baldemar Rivas, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr and letters by Steve Wands – opens, the former Robins are fighting the villainous sidekicks. Red Hood takes on Giggles, the groupie copying the Joker. Though hurt, Giggles doubles down on his new persona, telling Red Hood: “this is going to hurt you a lot more than it hurts me, Robin.” Damian overhears this, and immediately recognizes the line – it’s what the real Joker said to Jason Todd before severely beating him and leaving him to die. Damian reveals that he too planned to use the line to destabilize Red Hood if he ever needed to be taken out.

The jab comes on the heels of the recent Robin #5, in which Damian took down Red Hood by tricking him into a hug and then electrocuting him, informing Jason that his emotional nature makes it easy to manipulate him. Damian’s analysis is spot-on. Red Hood is easily the most emotional member of the Bat-Family, going right back to his days as Robin. He was always impulsive and headstrong, rushing into battle with little regard for the consequences. Jason Todd let his emotions cloud his judgement, leading him to commit questionable acts, such as letting a criminal fall to his death.

When he returned as Red Hood, it was far worse, mixing in feelings of abandonment and resentment with the anger and rage boiling under the surface. He did not hesitate to use lethal force against his opponents and openly defied Batman. It is worth noting that Red Hood is working through his issues, reconciling with Batman and taking a more tempered approach in his fight on crime. Red Hood is making progress, but there is a long way to go.

Red Hood Needs to Fix His Greatest Weakness (Or Hell Never Beat Robin)

Jason Todd is a trained combatant who has taken down far more powerful foes, but the fact remains that despite his fearsome reputation, Red Hood still isn’t on Robin’s level as a combatant, and his highly emotional nature is the major barrier he needs to clear if he’s ever going to catch up.
