Red Hoods Zombie Team Is More Trouble Than Its Worth

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Task Force Z #1

While the Red Hood is leading a new team in the DC Universe, the fact that they’re all zombies may make them more trouble than they’re worth. In the new Task Force Z, Jason Todd has been given the opportunity to lead a new team of formerly deceased supervillains instead of serving jail time, though it already seems to be a pretty stressful job. With the majority of his teammates being the ravenous undead, the chances for success on missions are minimal with Jason constantly trying to prevent his team from eating their targets (or himself).

Coming from writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Eddy Barrows, Task Force Z #1 begins with Red Hood and his team working in the streets of Gotham, hunting down the rogue known as Crazy Quilt who has recently escaped from Arkham Asylum. Being a relatively small-time criminal, the Quilt should be an easy target to take down. However, Red Hood’s teammates such as Bane, Man-Bat, Arkham Knight, Sundowner are all zombies (Mr. Bloom is on the team as well, though he isn’t undead). As a result, Bane and Man-Bat almost kill and eat Crazy Quilt, forcing Red Hood to intervene in the new issue.

Later on, Jason offers a rather frustrated and sarcastic mission report to his government handlers at Project Halperin, the program behind the reviving of dead supervillains using a compound derived from Lazarus Pits (the same supernatural waters that brought Jason back to life after being killed by the Joker as Robin). While they want to know how their assets did, Red Hood is brutally honest and accurately identifies the zombie team as an absolute mess that can barely be controlled.

While Halperin claims that they have the zombie villains under control and that they shouldn’t be trying to eat anyone while out in the field, that’s clearly not the case. Likewise, when Jason and his team are sent to investigate a store of Lazarus Resin that’s been taken by Mr. Freeze, Red Hood’s zombie allies are just as hungry as ever. Seeing as how the issue ends with Jason himself at risk of being eaten by the undead Arkham Knight, it begs the question: are there not better ways to form a new DC Task Force? Is turning dead villains into unruly zombies really the only option Halperin has, or did Amanda Waller truly take all the good and living villains for herself when putting together her Suicide Squad?

While the concept of a zombie team is intriguing, it does seem to be more of a hassle than anything else. Perhaps Jason Todd will be able to find a way to get a better handle on his undead teammates in future issues, but in order to do so he still has to survive their current mission without being eaten. In any case, here’s hoping Red Hood’s new Task Force Z doesn’t result in his eventual demise as a zombie’s next meal in the DC Universe.
