Red Lanterns How Does DCs ANGRIEST Corps Work

Formed by Atrocitus, one of the five survivors of the Massacre of Sector 666, the Red Lanterns harness the red spectrum of light fueled by anger and rage. First appearing in Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, and Ethan Van Sciver’s Green Lantern #25, Red Lanterns are a group of villains and occasional anti-heroes who greatly differ from their other Lantern counterparts. They are the most brutal and bloodthirsty of all the Lantern Corps, being even more villainous than the Yellow Ringed Sinestro Corps, and it is displayed in their oath: “With blood and rage of crimson red, Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, Together with our hellish hate, We’ll burn you all–that is your fate!”

Atrocitus formed the Red Lantern Corps using blood magics, killing his fellow survivors of the Massacre of Sector 666 and using their blood in combination with his own as part of his plans. Atrocitus formed the corps in order to seek revenge on the Guardians of the Universe whom he believed to be responsible for the massacre of his sector, and Sinestro, the Green Lantern responsible for his imprisonment on the prison planet of Ysmault. After forming the Red Power battery with bloody rage from his own body, Atrocitus sent out Red Lantern rings across the galaxy to create an army, recruiting Vice, Dex-Star, Bleez, and Laira and heading off to destroy the Guardians and kill Sinestro.

Upon accepting a red power ring, a host’s heart is rendered useless and their blood is spoiled from within, forcing them to violently expel it. In addition, the user is reduced to their most animalistic and primal state, with only Atrocitus retaining full control of himself. However, Atrocitus would later restore their ability to think for themselves and give them the purpose of punishing the guilty. Despite having the ability to make constructs like other lanterns, most Red Lanterns prefer the intensity of hand to hand combat or even burning their opponents with a “rage napalm” that is expelled from their rings. Red power rings also give their users the ability to open “blood portals” to traverse across the universe, read their opponent’s mind/memories, and inflict their enemies with rage.

In addition to their leader Atrocitus, Dex-Starr, a sadistic cat-like alien, Laira, a disgraced ex-Green Lantern, and Bleez, the right-hand woman of Atrocitus, various other DC Heroes have worn a red power ring over the years. Both Hal Jordan and Kyle Raynor wore red rings in the “Blackest Night” event, though they were able to fight the ring’s control. Superboy-Prime, Mera, and the Spectre all also wore red power rings. Other heroes, like Supergirl and Guy Gardner, embraced the ring for a short period of time. Guy Gardner even became a leader of the Red Lanterns in their New 52 series.

The Red Lanterns were last seen causing trouble for Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, with Cruz even being indoctrinated into the Corps for a short time before Baz was able to cure her. Since then they have not been seen, but are surely somewhere in the cosmos waiting for their next moment to strike with extreme rage.
