Last year, Netflix and The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich announced a new anime project without providing too many details. Since then, there has been no further news concerning the anime. That changed recently when a new report seemed to reveal the film’s working title.

According to The Cosmic Circus, the anime film will be animated by Studio Mir, much like its predecessor, and will be developed under the title, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Few other details have been reported and neither Hissirch or Netflix have provided hints as to when audiences might hear more of the project.

Sirens have appeared in The Witcher franchise, beginning with CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. They may be confused with the merpeople depicted in author Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel, Sword of Destiny, in the short story, “A Little Sacrifice.” The difference between the merpeople and sirens, while both have a penchant for song, sirens are more vicious and far less likely to converse with humans. When it comes to physical differences, sirens possess wings and can take to the air, where mermaids cannot.

What makes this working title notable is the fact that it is one of only a handful of examples of Netflix’s Witcher franchise drawing inspiration from the highly popular video games. However, at this point, it is uncertain if any sirens that appear in the anime film will resemble CD Projekt Red’s monsters or the highly intelligent race that appears in Sapkowski’s novels.

Hissrich announced the upcoming anime film at Netflix’s TUDUM event back in September 2021, alongside a family-friendly Witcher project and a third season of The Witcher. This will be the second anime film in Netflix’s Witcher franchise, following The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The first anime film followed Vesemir and the fall of Kaer Morhen, the hidden witcher fortress housing the School of the Wolf. The film was released ahead of The Witcher Season 2’s premiere, giving audiences a glimpse at the locations history, before its live-action debut. It’s unknown how Sirens of the Deep could tie in to the core Witcher series, if at all.

What is certain is that there are other areas of the growing franchise being actively developed by Netflix, including a fourth season of The Witcher. When asked about his future in the series, director Stephen Surjik said in an interview, “The writers and producers mapped out Season 4… I don’t know if I’m part of that mapping program, but at least they told me that they’re mapping it out.”
