Resident Alien Harry Loses His Closest Ally in His Latest Scheme

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Resident Alien Season 2, Episode 6, “An Alien in New York,” which aired March 2 on Syfy.

Though Harry Vanderspiegle, the disguised extraterrestrial living in the small Colorado town of Patience, has learned the value of friendship, he has just lost one of his oldest friends in his time on the planet. Fortunately for Earth, the lost friend isn’t Harry’s best human friend, Asta Twelvetrees, but his unnamed octopus buddy, with the octopus’ untimely demise brought about by Harry trying to maintain his otherworldly scheme, resulting in Harry experiencing grief in a way that only Resident Alien can present it.

Resident Alien Season 1 revealed that octopi are from another planet, secretly an extraterrestrial species themselves that are visiting Earth for whatever reason as bottom-feeding, aquatic animals. Harry finds a kindred spirit in an octopus at a local restaurant in Patience, able to communicate with the octopus and drop the pretext that he presents even to his friends like Asta, with the two forming an understanding. This provides Harry with a friend and a clear link to his cosmic home that he sorely needed while maintaining his cover.

After returning to Earth at the start of Season 2, Harry decided to free his octopus buddy, stealing him from the restaurant one night and setting him up in an aquarium in Harry’s makeshift bunker under his cabin on the outskirts of town. Though Harry enters an Odd Couple-style dynamic with the octopus, this comes undone when Harry crosses swords with his frenemies Max and Sahar. Though Harry begrudgingly returned to Earth to reunite a stowaway Max with his family, he is still at odds with the two children, especially after learning that Max stole a powerful device from Harry’s crashed spaceship.

Though the device had adverse effects on Max, kickstarting his puberty years in advance due to his proximity to its strange energies, Max and Sahar refuse to relinquish the device back to Harry despite his repeated warnings. To up the ante, Harry steals Sahar’s pet dog, offering to exchange the pup for his stolen device though the children continue to refuse him. This plan ultimately backfires on Harry, with the dog somehow getting into Harry’s aquarium and mauling the octopus, mortally wounding him. Though Harry desperately attempts to resuscitate the octopus, his friend dies anyway. After a period of intense mourning, Harry consumes the octopus over a fine dinner, remarking on how delicious his friend truly was as a final punchline.

While Harry struck up a friendship with the octopus, going as far as to claim he was a cousin due to octopi being distantly related to his own alien species, his multi-legged buddy’s demise is probably for the best. Though Harry no longer was intent on wiping out humanity, the octopus kept criticizing Harry’s decision to spare the species and ridiculing his burgeoning sense of humanity. This led him to butt heads with Asta frequently, as the octopus revealed it could communicate with her as well.

Unbeknownst to Harry, he has old enemies rallying together to track him down again and take him into custody, and now he no longer has the friend most distrustful of humanity to keep that paranoia sharp. Harry has displayed new abilities to maintain his cover but now his only support system on Earth comes from humans themselves… unless he decides to raid another restaurant and steal their seafood special to keep him company as he contemplates how to save humanity from his counterparts coming from across the cosmos.
