Netflix reveals the cast for the live-action series adaptation Resident Evil, with Lance Reddick leading as iconic villain Albert Wesker. Capcom’s survival horror franchise began in 1996 and has been credited with helping define its genre while also bringing zombies back to the popular culture spotlight after seemingly dying off in film. The project is said to be set across two different timelines, the first of which sees Jade and Billie Wesker moving to New Raccoon City and becoming skeptical of their father’s secrets while the second is set a decade in the future after the release of the T-virus.

The live-action Resident Evil series was announced late last year as one of two TV projects in development for the property at Netflix alongside the forthcoming CGI anime Infinite Darkness. The series is being developed and written by former Supernatural co-showrunner and writer Andrew Dabb while Constantin Film, who produced the Milla Jovovich-starring film franchise, is producing. After nearly a year of a lack of any kind of word regarding its development, news is finally making its way to the forefront for the series.

As part of its ongoing Geeked Week, the official Twitter account for Netflix Geeked revealed that the cast for the live-action series has been set with Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph and Paola Núñez. For the cherry on top, John Wick alum Lance Reddick will lead the cast as iconic villain Albert Wesker. Check out the announcement below:

Though not without their fans, the live-action Resident Evil movies were well-known for their departures from the source material and improper use of its characters as the franchise went on. While the current plot for the series establishes an original story rather than one from the games, it nonetheless already has a lot of promise going for it. From its incredibly diverse cast to offering a better spotlight for so-evil-you-can’t-help-but-love-him Wesker, this original take looks to be the shake in the formula the world of Resident Evil adaptations needs.

Now that a cast has been set for the series, production should begin on Netflix’s Resident Evil shortly, if not already having gotten underway. For those too eager to wait for the live-action series, the streaming platform has Infinite Darkness coming right around the corner. Plus, with the feature reboot Welcome to Raccoon City coming to theaters in November and Village now available to play, this is definitely the year for the Resident Evil franchise to dominate.
