Resident Evil The 10 Most Terrifying Scenes In The Film Franchise

The Resident Evil video game franchise coined the term “survival horror” and gave audiences a brand new experience that blended action with terror. Suspense was high, jump scares were plenty, and all manner of horrific creatures took their shot at the player. The franchise has survived and is still going strong today with an upcoming eighth official installment due out soon.

On the Hollywood front, Resident Evil managed to make a splash with a series of films that borrowed heavily from the games, but filmmakers tweaked the source material to center the story around the character of Alice, who doesn’t actually exist in the games. While primarily an over-the-top action vehicle, Resident Evil also had its own bountiful supply of scares, and here are some of the absolute best.

9 Desert Zombie Attack (Resident Evil: Extinction)

The third Resident Evil film found Dr. Isaacs testing out a newly enhanced strain of zombie on Alice and her crew in the middle of the Nevada desert. This slightly domesticated breed is capable of being controlled by Umbrella who, in tur,n can better identify and attack potential targets.

The scene is frightening for its depiction of “fast zombies” most commonly associated with films like 28 Days Later and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. Here, speed becomes truly frightening, as there’s little time for the survivors to react before they are overwhelmed.

8 Alice & Claire Vs. The Executioner (Resident Evil: Afterlife)

A massive ax-wielding member of the infected is one of the principal antagonists in Resident Evil: Afterlife, and he’s no slouch when it comes to the scares. Not only is he mammoth in size, but his brutality is unquestionably frightening. He’s responsible for breaking down the gate that allows the infected into the compound, and this sets up an epic fight that helps conclude the second act.

The Executioner shows up later in the scene and re-introduces himself by slicing someone in half before attacking Alice and Claire. After knocking out Alice during a fight, it’s up to Claire to take him out. It’s a mixture of scares and cool factor as Claire gets the ultimate revenge.

7 The Laser Grid (Resident Evil)

Audiences might have been scared at the horrors that lay deep within the bowels of Umbrella’s secret research facility, but they were on the edge of their seat during the infamous laser grid sequence. Designed as a security measure against unwanted intrusion into the sensitive lower levels of the Hive, this grid was triggered by the Red Queen in an attempt to keep the commando team from inadvertently unleashing the T-Virus.

Team leader James Shade got the worst of it when he successfully managed to dodge the incoming laser attacks. Before his team had a chance to shut it down, the Red Queen activated an un-dodgeable grid pattern that turned him into cubes and left him a crumpled mass of flesh on the floor.

6 Hotel Inspection (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Carlos and L.J. run into trouble when they investigate an abandoned hotel and end up coming face to face with a few undead baddies. It’s a classic haunted house scene complete with dim lighting, creaking doors, and jumpscares galore.

Things go from bad to worse when L.J. kills a zombie and loses track of his surroundings. A second zombie attacks, and L.J. spots her in a mirror which he shoots. It’s the wrong move and ends up costing him his life in the end.

5 Dead Rising From The Graves (Resident Evil: Apocalypse)

Resident Evil went classic gothic in the second film when the T-Virus somehow managed to seep into the coffins of the dead at a local cemetery. Soon they began rising from their graves to swell the ranks of the zombie outbreak.

There’s something truly sinister and terrifying about the dead crawling out of their graves, perhaps in large part to the public’s consciousness around Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. It’s played to excellent effect in this scene as Alice and her friends battle the decomposed undead amongst the tombstones.

4 The Elevator Death (Resident Evil)

The first initial battle with a zombie horde took place in the original Resident Evil when Alice and the Umbrella commando team came face to face with them in the Hive. Their numbers were too great, and the team too inexperienced to go for the head-shots that were capable of putting them down.

In the midst of the chaos, the team attempted to decode a door that would have led to safety. Unfortunately for team member J.D., it meant certain doom when the door opened up to a ravenous horde of former Umbrella scientists on the other side who quickly devoured him.

3 Dog Swarm (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

The original T-Virus-infected dogs of Resident Evil were nothing compared to the vastly mutated canines of The Final Chapter. In the film, Wesker releases a huge pack of them on Alice and her friends, and the ensuing chase is one of the frightening of the series.

The resulting pursuit is relentless and doesn’t let up even when Alice and her crew leap off the side of a cliff into the water below. The dogs circle around to continue the carnage, leaving several dead members of the party in their wake.

2 The Fake Family Attack (Resident Evil: Retribution)

Clones of Alice and Carlos suffer a horrific fate in Retribution, and they aren’t even fully aware of the situation. After Carlos, known as “Todd” in the movie, is killed by a zombie, Alice and their young “daughter” Becky flee a pursuing horde through the suburban streets of what should be Raccoon City.

The dead are everywhere, and things soon go to the dogs leaving Alice dead. In truth, the entire thing was a simulation run by Umbrella to demonstrate the effectiveness of the T-Virus during an outbreak scenario.

1 The Floating Zombie (Resident Evil)

Jump scares were a-plenty in the first Resident Evil film, but few of them freaked out audiences more than the scene involving dead bodies in a flooded room. It’s the first demonstration of the viral outbreak and its effects on the human Umbrella staff within the Hive.

The team surveys the scene before moving on, at which point the camera slowly pan-zooms in close to a young dead woman floating around. Her eyes open, and her hand grabs the glass in a jump scare that everyone saw coming yet no one was prepared for.
