WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Resident Evil Village, available now.

While Resident Evil Village has a variety of guns that can be found or unlocked, none of these weapons are as reliable as the trusty sidearm. The abundance of handgun ammo and the number of upgrades for each one make the humble handgun a mainstay in Ethan’s inventory.

In true Resident Evil fashion, you’ll spend most of the game with a handgun while trying to preserve your precious shotgun and grenade launcher ammo. Fortunately, Ethan has plenty of handguns he can find to help him in his quest to rescue his daughter from Mother Miranda.

LEMI

Ethan’s first handgun is given to him by one of the survivors of the village outbreak. The LEMI doesn’t have a particularly large damage output, but it’s precise and easy to use with ammo for it being abundant, starting with 10 rounds in the magazine.

The LEMI’s two weapon attachments are among the earliest weapon upgrades Ethan can find: the Recoil Compensator, which increases firepower, can be found after defeating Bela Dimitriscu, while the High-Capacity Magazine, which increases the number of carried rounds, can be purchased from the Duke. Further upgrades from the Duke’s shop can make the LEMI a formidable handgun that can carry Ethan throughout the game.

M1911

The Colt M1911 can be found in a locker after defeating Lady Alcina Dimitrescu. It has slightly better base stats than the LEMI, but its expensive upgrades and low initial ammo capacity mean that it’s not quite as reliable. Unlike the LEMI, the 1911 is fully automatic, a trait that won’t see full use until it is further upgraded.

The High-Capacity Magazine upgrade can be found in the Reservoir, which greatly increases the 1911’s ammo capacity. An Improved Grip can be purchased from the Duke, greatly reducing recoil and making the full-auto function of the weapon much more viable. However, several of these upgrades are locked behind story progression and can be very expensive, so it’s not really worth it unless the player enjoys using this gun.

V61 Custom

This fully automatic machine pistol packs a massive amount of firepower. Only purchasable from the Duke, it becomes available in his shop once Ethan reaches Heisenberg’s Factory of cybernetic Frankenstein monsters. With a very high rate of fire, this weapon is great for pushing back large groups of enemies and blowing up heads with a hail of bullets.

All of the V61’s upgrades are acquired from the Duke’s shop: the Gunstock reduces its recoil, the Long Barrel increases its firepower and the Drum Magazine increases its ammo capacity. If the player is willing to shell out a fairly large amount of money, the V61 can be one of the best weapons in the game.

Samurai Edge

A staple weapon of the Resident Evil franchise, the Samurai Edge has been used by series heroes multiple times. Ethan last used Albert Wesker’s model in Resident Evil VII: Biohazard. Wesker’s gun returns to Ethan’s arsenal in Village but is only available as part of the “Trauma Pack” DLC.

The Samurai Edge has better base stats than the LEMI, but it quickly becomes a paper tiger once it sees action. The gun is not upgradeable and cannot be modded, meaning the slightly superior base stats to the LEMI don’t mean much at all in the long run. This weapon is purely for fans of the series who love the look of the iconic Samurai Edge, but otherwise, it seems like every other weapon has an edge over it.

USM-AI

The USM-AI is a semi-automatic pistol with a near-perfect balance of firepower, accuracy and rate of fire, being Chris Redfield’s default firearm throughout his appearances in Village. Near the end of the game, the player switches from Ethan to Chris and gains access to this firearm during Chris’ village assault. Ethan can only use it after the player purchases it from the extra content store and buys it from the Duke in-game after the game is finished once.

The USM-AI is an excellent pistol that can easily kill the vast majority of basic enemies very quickly in the hands of a skilled player. The lack of upgrades is the gun’s biggest downfall, but it is still a great pistol that Ethan can rely on in New Game Plus.

M1851 Wolfsbane

One of the most powerful weapons that Ethan can find in the base game, the M1851 Wolfsbane is a revolver that uses incredibly rare magnum rounds, unmatched in sheer firepower and can pierce multiple foes with a single shot. Defeating Lord Moreau opens the pathway for Ethan to unlock the door that holds this beauty in its gun case. Although it has a very slow firing rate and reload speed, it makes short work of even the toughest bosses, making it fantastic for finishing blows.

The Wolfsbane has two upgrade mods: a purchasable 7-round cylinder that increases ammo capacity and a firepower-increasing Long Barrel found in Heisenberg’s factory. However, every upgrade that requires purchase is monumentally expensive and may require multiple playthroughs to fund its enhancements.

S.T.A.K.E.

If the Wolfsbane somehow isn’t powerful enough for you, then this vampire-killing monstrosity should do the trick. The S.T.A.K.E. is a semi-automatic magnum pistol with higher base stats than the Wolfsbane but can only be unlocked after completing the game once and buying it from the Extra Content menu.

This weapon is a marked improvement over the already-great Wolfsbane, but it costs quite a lot of money, with the Duke’s upgrades being costly by themselves. The player will most likely only use this on higher difficulties where its boss-killing properties are borderline required.

Handcannon PZ

Resident Evil Village Every Handgun & Available Upgrade

A trophy weapon that’s absurdly powerful and intimidating, the Handcannon PZ can only be acquired after completing the game on Hardcore difficulty, where it becomes available to purchase in the Extra Content menu. An expensive purchase from the Duke’s menu, the Handcannon PZ can provide comparable firepower to the Wolfsbane while only using the far more common Sniper Rifle rounds.

While a handcannon with plentiful ammo is awesome to have, the S.T.A.K.E. is more easily obtained. Its Infinite Ammo unlock is also easier to achieve, making the Handcannon PZ redundant. The PZ is purely a trophy weapon for experienced players to have fun with, with no upgrades to be had.

Rocket Pistol

Potentially the final trophy weapon, the Rocket Pistol is unlocked after completing the extremely difficult “Village of Shadows” difficulty. Despite sounding like an absurdly powerful weapon on paper, the Rocket Pistol’s rockets do surprisingly little amounts of damage per shot, relying on the ensuing explosions to create AoE attacks.

Despite its cool name and gimmick, the Rocket Pistol just doesn’t fit the bill for most players. Mostly useful for eliminating large groups of enemies, the Rocket Pistol cannot be upgraded and mostly exists just for the player to enjoy more frequent explosions.
