Resident Evil Village Sequel Discussed By Director

Speaking with Famitsu, Resident Evil Village Director Morimasa Sato admitted that he’s uncertain of what the future holds for the franchise, but said it will continue to evolve its approach to horror. Though the core tenets of fear never strayed far, Resident Evil’s 25-year history has seen the series change quite drastically on more than one occasion.

In its original incarnation, the tentpole Capcom brand boasted fixed camera angles that accentuated slow, methodical gameplay. The advent of Resident Evil 4 in 2005 reinvented both the groundbreaking horror franchise and games in general, introducing the basis of what would become known as action horror. Plus, Capcom ditched the fixed camera in favor of an over-the-should camera view, which served as inspiration for the likes of Gears of War. RE developers altered course once more upon diving into Resident Evil 7, an entry that leaned more into survival horror mechanics and abandoned the third-person perspective in its entirety to instead focus on first-person gameplay. As a direct sequel to RE7, this year’s RE Village further expanded upon the mechanics packed within the 2017 experience. But what might a ninth mainline entry do to shake things up yet again?

Morimasa Sato recently spoke with Japanese publication Famitsu about the future of Resident Evil. Siliconera translated excerpts from the interview, wherein Sato admitted being unsure about how the narrative will proceed following the wild adventure in Resident Evil Village. He mentioned an interest in continuing to explore what defines horror, though, telling Famitsu the following: “There are certain clichés with classic horror creatures, scenarios, and execution, but “fear” is essentially a primitive reaction to an unpredictable or unknowable event. So I feel like there is only a new sense of horror, or a new Resident Evil, only after breaking those clichés.”

Sato later noted that Resident Evil has always evolved in an effort to deliver the best horror experience possible. But with regards to where such a trajectory may take the brand next, Sato had this to say: “I don’t know know how the Resident Evil series will evolve in the future.”

It won’t be spoiled here, but Resident Evil Village’s ending suggests the story behind Ethan Winters is not yet complete. Sato’s comments imply the development team remains unsure of whether or not to follow through on a third chapter for this particular tale, though.

At the very least, the world of RE Village will eventually have more on offer. Capcom announced during its E3 2021 presentation that development had just begun on an expansion, for example. The publisher’s annual report for 2021 also indicated free RE Village DLC separate from the paid content is in the works.
