Resident Evil Village Shows How RE7s Events Were Covered Up

Resident Evil Village serves as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7, starring many of the same characters. RE Village’s story is closely intertwined with that of RE7, and new details in the game’s opening moments show how the events of the previous game have been covered up and forgotten by society at large.

Ever since the reveal that Resident Evil 7 protagonist Ethan Winters would be returning for Resident Evil Village, fans have been curious how the two games would relate to one another. The game’s first hour makes clear it’s indeed a continuation of Resident Evil 7’s story, going so far as to recommend players watch a brief video recapping the events of the previous game. Though Resident Evil Village is heavily inspired by the more action-oriented Resident Evil 4, its first-person perspective, characters, tone, and even themes all carry over from RE7.

It makes perfect sense, then, that Resident Evil Village would elaborate on what happened at the end of the previous game and explain how the world responded to bioweapons wrecking havoc in a remote bayou of backwater Louisiana. Here’s how Resident Evil Village shows the public’s reaction to the events of Resident Evil 7 – or, more accurately, its total lack of one.

How Resident Evil Village Explores The Aftermath Of RE7

Players begin Resident Evil Village in the home of Ethan Winters, who’s sitting alongside his wife, Mia, and their newborn daughter, Rose, as Mia reads a fairytale. Mia concludes her story and then tasks Ethan with putting Rose to bed while she finishes preparing dinner, allowing players to freely explore their new, wine-filled European home. By exploring the house and interacting with various objects, players can learn a little more backstory about Rose’s birth, the couple’s new European life, and the aftermath of Resident Evil 7.

Sitting upstairs on a desk in an unused bedroom is a newspaper describing “The Dulvey Gas Incident.” The article states the “incident” (i.e. the total destruction of the Baker home and surrounding area) was the result of a natural gas leak that had built up under the mudrock in the bayou. Jack Baker and his family are said to have been exposed to the gas and died as a result. The article also states two other people were present during the incident, Ethan and Mia Winters, but that their current whereabouts are unknown. The article concludes by saying officials believe the area of the incident will be uninhabitable for at least 10 years.

After interacting with the newspaper, Ethan mutters under his breath about how the world has already forgotten events that scarred him and his wife for life. As for why nobody knows the whereabouts of Ethan and Mia, after the duo was rescued by Chris Redfield and Blue Umbrella agents at the end of Resident Evil 7, they were spirited away to a remote safehouse in Europe for their own safety. Ethan then began to undergo military training as a means of preparing himself, should similar events to his encounter with the Baker family ever happen again.

As was perhaps expected, few outside of Blue Umbrella, Ethan, Mia, and Chris know what truly transpired during Resident Evil 7, with the truth about the incident and the death of the Baker family covered up – not that anyone would have believed it anyway. After all, the game’s final boss is a grandmother who, in true Resident Evil fashion, transforms into a house-sized tentacle monster. Perhaps, as Resident Evil Village shows, the truth is sometimes better left unknown.
