Resident Evil Villain T00 Was Almost In Welcome To Raccoon City

Director Johannes Roberts reveals why Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City gets rid of a major villain from the games. Premiering this Wednesday, November 24, the upcoming action-horror movie is based on the Resident Evil video game franchise. The first edition of the Japanese horror game series came out over 20 years ago in 1996 with the most recent installment, Resident Evil Village, releasing earlier this spring.

The primary villain in the games is the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical giant that produces biological weapons in the form of viruses and other compounds. Players fight to take down the mega-corporation, which is primarily stationed in Raccoon City, a fictional town in the American midwest. Many of the first games, as well as later installments, take place in Raccoon City, while later versions follow outbreaks caused by the spread of the Umbrella Corporation’s bio-weapons. The first film adaptation of the games, titled Resident Evil, was released in 2002 and spawned a series of six films, the most recent of which came out in 2016. Raccoon City is both the seventh film in the series and a series reboot that focuses on the storylines from the original games.

On Comicbook.com’s podcast, ComicBook Nation, Roberts explains why he couldn’t include all of the major characters from the games. Specifically, Roberts had to make the creative decision to cut Mr. X, a villain from 1998’s Resident Evil 2. Known as the Tyrant or T-00 in the game, the humanoid monster is a bio-weapon originally created by Umbrella and later transported to Raccoon City on a mission to find a sample of the G-virus. Despite his importance in Resident Evil 2, the Tyrant didn’t make the final cut of Welcome to Raccoon City:

The one thing that I wanted to put in and I didn’t, I just couldn’t find a way to put in was Mr. X. There is a nod. It’s tricky to see in the shot and I was like, “Just use that shot,” but it doesn’t work in the movie. And I was like, “Okay,” with a movie you have to actually tell a proper movie rather than just use the shots that you want.

The movie is based on content from the first two Resident Evil games, a relatively small sample compared to the vast 28-game series. Still, Roberts and screenwriter Greg Russo had to be selective when deciding what to include in order to create a more focused narrative. The Tyrant is the secondary antagonist in the second game who mostly interacts with Leon S. Kennedy (played by Avan Jogia in the upcoming film), so including his mission in the film would likely complicate the story for audiences. Although he’s an important antagonist in Resident Evil 2, the character’s inclusion isn’t necessary to tell the story of how the Umbrella Corporation took hold of Raccoon City.

According to Roberts, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City harkens back to the tone of the first two games but tells a new story separate from the preceding six films. The director has said his intention was to create a scary film that recalls his experience of being terrified when he first encountered the video games. In order to achieve the scares, however, Roberts has emphasized the importance of creating a grounded narrative. Initial reactions to the movie have been generally positive, with critics saying the movie honors the games but isn’t especially scary. From the sound of it, the film succeeds as a grounded adaptation but may have been scarier with Mr. X in it.
