Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

With Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City now in theaters, fans have the opportunity to see which of their favorite characters are adapted in a likable manner. Not all beloved characters receive this treatment, while not all villains stay entirely true to the source material (for the better).

From Kaya Scodelario’s Claire Redfield and her brother Chris (Robbie Amell) to the duplicitous William Birkin and Albert Wesker, Welcome to Raccoon City has a wide spectrum when it comes to its characters’ charm.

10 William Birkin (Neal McDonough)

Even before he becomes a scary Resident Evil movie creature, William Birkin is far from likable. It’s obvious that Neal McDonough’s character is the villain pretty much from the start. The movie doesn’t show him experimenting on children, but even a quick look at Claire and Chris Redfield’s surroundings lets the viewer know that something is very much off.

As it turns out, the Redfields and all their bunkmates are guinea pigs for the T-Virus. Birkin takes great pride in his life’s work, but his life’s work is also laced in torture and murder.

9 Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper)

Even as a recurring character in some of the best Resident Evil movies, Albert Wesker has been somewhat of an enigma. In Welcome to Raccoon City the character gets some expansion. At first, his obvious chemistry with Jill Valentine makes the viewer wonder if he really will turn on his STARS teammates.

The fact that he does turn on them and knowingly leaves them for dead actually makes him less likable (for the sequels) than the blank-slate character from Paul W.S. Anderson’s movies. But here Wesker has more personality than almost any other character, so seeing him in at least some conflict about his decision (and his subsequent apology) boosts his standing.

8 Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia)

Even putting aside how this version of Leon S. Kennedy is almost nothing like his video game counterpart, he’s not the most enjoyable cast member to watch. Kennedy’s role in this film is to ask “What’s going on?!” repeatedly. He also sometimes gets attacked or held in the arms of some mutation only to have someone else (usually Claire) kill the attacker from off-screen.

Kennedy being a rookie cop is still in this version, but the script goes out of the way to make him seem incompetent. There’s fish out of water and there’s a character vocalizing their befuddlement at their own profession. This adaptation of Leon just seems like a liability, and that’s not appealing in an apocalypse.

7 Chief Brian Irons (Donal Logue)

Donal Logue steals his scenes in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, but Chief Brian Irons isn’t exactly the most sympathetic individual. He turns dereliction of duty into an art form, almost immediately trying to run from Raccoon City once Umbrella’s alarm goes off.

There’s always someone who runs away in 90s horror survival games, but things don’t go so well for Irons. Umbrella has the roads blocked, violently if necessary, and he returns to his position at the station. But Chief Irons has already revealed his cowardice, and a fairly funny personality can’t compensate for that.

6 Richard Aiken (Chad Rook)

STARS member Richard Aiken seems like a seasoned fighter who prefers to see his team at peace. His dialogue is extremely limited, so it’s hard to gauge just how kind or decent he is.

But Aiken’s standing firm at the top of the staircase bought Chris Redfield some time, even if it cost him his own life in the process. Self-sacrifice is arguably the most likable thing someone can do in a Resident Evil movie. Regardless, the best Resident Evil games and movies always have cannon fodder, at least Aiken has somewhat of a personality.

5 Ben Bertolucci (Josh Cruddas)

Ben Bertolucci is arguably the film’s most likable side character. He makes only two appearances, but it’s clear that he’s at least a concerned citizen.

He believes that the Umbrella Corporation has been poisoning Raccoon City’s water supply. The details on how often, how much, and when are unclear. Bertolucci’s likability points really come from his sincerity; When he’s discussing the issue with Claire via video chat, it’s clear he’s scared for others as well as himself.

4 Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell)

Chris Redfield is a smug yet enjoyable character from the Resident Evil franchise. His adaptation is a nice, soft-spoken guy, but he has some major flaws.

Chris seems to lack a whole lot of personality, mostly identifying with what Umbrella has done for him (which isn’t what he thinks). The character gets real points for how he treats his sister in the third act. He finally believes that something is off in Raccoon City as well as the fact that Claire saw a “monster” when they were children. It’s just too bad he couldn’t have been a supportive, believing big brother in their young adulthood like he was in their youth. He may not have believed her about Lisa Trevor even then, but his protectiveness was palpable.

3 Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen)

Jill Valentine is probably going to be a big part of the franchise going forward should Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City receive sequels. In this installment, however, she doesn’t do much besides wordlessly firing guns or standing around joshing with her coworkers.

But Valentine is a beloved figure from the series so there’s a lot of potential gold to mine in order to expand the character. Her dynamic with Wesker and the rest of the team is a good jumping-off point to reveal just how likable she is.

2 Lisa Trevor (Marina Mazepa)

Lisa Trevor is initially positioned as the film’s main antagonist, with her tapping Claire Redfield’s head serving as the first scare. In time, it’s realized that (unlike in the games) she’s friendly. Just looking for a friend, she’s reaching out to the one other child in the Raccoon City Orphanage that she doesn’t think will scream, run, or attack her.

All of this is conveyed in full later in the movie. Trevor herself doesn’t say much outside of “Claire,” but she’s able to communicate everything through action. Once the film’s rendition of the Licker comes in, Trevor leaps on its back and kicks its jaw off, effectively saving Claire and Leon.

1 Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario)

Claire Redfield is the film’s most likable character if only for the fact that she feels the most fleshed-out. Her past is clear, her motives are clear, and her personal attributes are clear. It’s established early on that she’s ethical, forcing the groping man who picked her up to pull over after he hits someone (a zombie). It’s also revealed that she’s practical, coming up with plans to help while the truck driver just screams. In a zombie apocalypse, practicality is likable.

Claire really excels when it comes to her motivation. She’s out for revenge against Umbrella because of what they’ve done to children (herself nearly included). Seeking vengeance on those who’ve hurt children is far from distasteful, it feels downright relatable.
