Retiring Evil Deads Ash Was An Easy Decision For Bruce Campbell

Actor Bruce Campbell’s decision to no longer play Evil Dead’s horror hero Ash Williams may have disappointed fans, but for him, it was an easy choice to make. Since 1981 when the first film in the gore-filled saga was released, Campbell has gained a loyal following for his work as Ash. Consistently stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time, Ash’s charm in the face of his one-man war against the undead has been a treat for fans.

Together with writer/director Sam Raimi, Ash evolved throughout the Evil Dead trilogy into something of a trademark, complete with his own signature catchphrases. But the last time that fans saw the character engaged in a feature film battle against Deadites was all the way back in 1993, with Army of Darkness. Since then, the demand for more Evil Dead films has continued among the franchise’s dedicated fanbase, and at long last, an official fourth entry is due to arrive at some point next year. However, one big difference with the upcoming Evil Dead Rise is that it won’t feature Campbell as Ash. In fact, as word of a fourth Evil Dead film spread last year, it was quickly revealed that Campbell was done with the series.

Though he remains on board in a creative capacity as a producer on Evil Dead Rise, Campbell’s days of decimating Deadites is, unfortunately, very much over. Hollywood has long been a place where actors can and do announce retirement in various capacities, only to return at some point down the road. But as Campbell recently explained to Collider, the physicality of the role proved to the 63-year-old that it was officially time to hang up his boom stick. That fact might sadden fans, but for Campbell, he has no regrets and seems quite eager to see where the franchise can go in the future:

“I’m done playing Ash, so that determines a lot of where we go with the franchise without that character, but there are more stories. We’re doing it book-focused these days. That darn book gets around, and that’s how we play it. That book wound up in an urban environment with a single mom, so let’s see what happens. It’s fun to fiddle with it. There’s not gonna be any traditional form of Evil Dead anymore. Ash is gone. I’ve retired the character because I physically just can’t do him anymore, so why bother? Why do I do it? It’s time to hang up the chainsaw. But we still are filmmakers, we’re still producers, we’re still creative-type dudes, so we were like, “How do we keep this going otherwise?” Sam [Raimi] handpicked Fede Alvarez to do the remake a few years ago. He handpicked Lee Cronin for this one. These are Sam Raimi proteges that we hope will do a good job.”

When it comes to a character that has been such a major part of a film series like Evil Dead, it’s never easy to say goodbye. A fourth film remains an exciting prospect for fans, but it took three films and a TV series to truly make Ash what he is today. Though the series isn’t on the same level as something like Star Wars, that film franchise’s decision to kill off Han Solo still remains a tough pill to swallow for some, and the same can arguably be said for fans of Ash. But of course, nothing lasts forever, and Campbell’s age understandably plays a part in how physical he can be during action sequences.

With Evil Dead Rise as well as future installments now focusing on the Necronomicon and its destructive impact on the lives of others, the Evil Dead franchise is in the middle of an important transitional period. It’s far too difficult at this point to determine how it will all pan out, but it’s safe to say that for fans of the series, no one can ever replace Ash. That being said, with Campbell still on board as a producer, hopefully, Evil Dead Rise will live up to its predecessors.
