The late 1990s and early 2000s were a great time for TV on two of the most popular family-friendly channels: The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. It was a time where viewers had a hard time choosing which network they liked better. Over on Reddit, fans would say that Disney had some of the best live-action shows but Nickelodeon had some of the best cartoons.
From a lineup like Rugrats, Cat Dog, The Weekenders, and Legends of the Hidden Temple, which channel comes out on top with the best shows from the late ‘90s and early 2000s?
10 Disney: The Proud Family
The Proud Family lasted for three seasons from 2001 to 2005. The cartoon followed 14-year-old Penny Proud growing up in a busy family as she dealt with the changes that come with a teenager. Her overbearing father, Oscar, and her wild grandmother, Sugar Mama, were some of the funniest parts of the series, according to Reddit. The show is so beloved that Disney announced a revival of the show for Disney+ this year.
9 Nickelodeon: Kenan & Kel
Nickelodeon’s Kenan & Kel followed best friends Kenan and Kel and the adventures they had in Chicago. Kenan was always trying to make moves in business and become something great, and Kel was his go-to right-hand man. Kel’s goofy behavior typically got the two into hilarious shenanigans but their friendship prevailed.
The sitcom lasted for four seasons from 1996 to 2000 and inspired Nickelodeon to make a movie called Good Burger, starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell.
8 Disney: Even Stevens
Even Stevens was a live-action sitcom based on the Stevens family. Brother and sister, Ren and Louis, are the focus of the family and couldn’t be more different from each other. The two often butt heads and get each other into trouble but there’s love between them at the end of the day. The show launched the career of Shia LeBeouf and spiraled into a 2003 movie called The Even Stevens Movie.
7 Nickelodeon: Hey Arnold!
Hey Arnold! lasted for five seasons on Nickelodeon from 1996 to 2004. The beloved cartoon revolved around a young boy named Arnold and his group of friends. After losing his parents, he lived with his grandparents in the apartment building they owned and made friends with the building’s tenants.
The show was relatable for kids that age as it tackled deeper issues in a friendly way. In 2002, Hey Arnold!: The Movie released and in 2017, a television movie released, Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie.

She had psychic abilities and would often try to change certain occurrences to work in her favor. Her friends and her family were well aware of her powers because they became everyday occurrences. The sitcom hit 100 episodes, four seasons, and inspired three spinoffs!
1 Nickelodeon: The Wild Thornberrys
Nickelodeon’s The Wild Thornberrys was far more than an animated television show that featured a young girl who could speak to animals, it was wildly educational and inspired viewers to travel. The Thornberrys were a family who traveled around the world because the mom and dad were wildlife filmmakers. Their daughter Eliza had the ability to talk to animals and had a talking chimpanzee as a best friend. The famous show lasted for five seasons and launched a movie, The Wild Thornberrys Movie.
