Based on the best-selling novel, The Hunger Games kicked off one of the most popular movie franchises of the last decade. The dystopian adventure introduced a dark and fascinating world filled with interesting characters and a complex history. It also helped to make young Jennifer Lawrence a household name.

While the movie was a huge modern blockbuster, it has the feel of the kind of movie we might have seen in the ’80s. With the young cast, the elaborate sci-fi world, and the over-the-top premise, it would be interesting to see this story transplanted into the world of ’80s filmmaking with a cast of that era filling the now-famous roles.

10 President Snow – Max Von Sydow

The villainous President Snow is an interesting antagonist for the story. He is the overseer of this world and the deadly games at the center of the plot. He is not a bloodthirsty madman who likes to see young people die, but rather a calm and calculating leader who thinks he is serving the greater good.

Donald Sutherland brought a lot of gravitas to the role of Snow and never made the character cartoonishly evil. Max Von Sydow would bring a similar elegance to the part while also showing a threatening layer underneath the calmness.

9 Seneca Crane – William Atherton

Though President Snow is the real man in charge, Seneca Crane is presented as the Head Gamemaker, the man who coordinates the game and its threats. He is the kind of slimy bad guy who is willing to do terrible things but is also too afraid to get his own hands dirty.

William Atherton made a reputation for himself in ’80s movies playing very unlikeable characters. While he didn’t play the villain per se, he was great at playing the secondary jerks in hits like Die Hard and Ghostbusters. He would be perfect in this role as Snow’s lackey.

8 Caesar Flickerman – Billy Crystal

Stanley Tucci seems to be the actor having the most fun with his role in this franchise. He plays Caesar Flickerman, the flamboyant and highly energetic host of the Hunger Games. He is funny and his personality is always positive, making him a really eccentric character.

Billy Crystal was already an established comedic star in the ’80s and would be the perfect person to take on this small yet memorable role. Crystal’s role in The Princess Bride shows how he can pop up for a small part and steal the show.

7 Cinna – Prince

As young Katniss prepares herself to become a warrior in the Hunger Games, she acquires a few allies. One of them is her stylist Cinna, someone who helps her to become a memorable symbol to the people and supports her throughout the process.

In the movie, Cinna was played by musician Lenny Kravitz and it would be interesting to see another popular musician of the ’80s step into the role. Prince’s acting career was not extensive, but with roles like Purple Rain, he has the right energy for the part.

6 Primrose – Drew Barrymore

Katniss first volunteers to fight in the Hunger Games after her younger sister Primrose is selected to represent their district. Prim is a loving and strong sister who takes a lot of pride in her sister.

Drew Barrymore started her long acting career at a very young age in the ’80s. She quickly became a star thanks to performances in movies like E.T and Firestarter. She would be perfectly suited for the adorable Prim who grows into a fighter herself.

5 Effie – Catherin O’Hara

Elizabeth Banks seemed to have a lot of fun with her role as Effie in The Hunger Games. She is one of the members of the Capital who acts as Katniss and Peeta’s escort for the games. She always dresses in elaborate costumes and is so involved with her own image she fails to recognize all the horror around her.

This role seems very similar to Catherine O’Hara’s role as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, from the insane outfits to the self-involved attitude. However, it also fits closely to O’Hara’s role in the ’80s classic Beetlejuice.

4 Haymitch – Bill Murray

Each district is assigned a former champion who acts as a mentor for the new participants. In the case of Katniss and Peeta, they are assigned Haymitch, a drunken and blunt man passed his prime. Haymitch is a bit rough around the edges but proves himself to be a good ally when needed.

Bill Murray excels at these kinds of roles and certainly did in the ’80s. his dry wit and careless attitude fit perfectly for Haymitch but he also has that underlining charm that shows the character’s softer side.

3 Gale – Jason Patric

Every good young adult story needs a love triangle and Gale represents the complication in the romance between Katniss and Peeta. Gale is the hunky childhood friend of Katniss with who she clearly shares a strong bond. He is a supportive friend who also has a passion for fighting injustice.

Jason Patric started his Hollywood career in the 80s, with an especially notable role in the hit film The Lost Boys. He showcased that smoldering intensity and heroic determination that drive the character of Gale.

2 Peeta – Matthew Broderick

Along with Katniss, Peeta is selected to be the male representative for District 12. Peeta is a carrying and thoughtful young man who has strong feelings for Katniss. Though he is not a warrior like her, he is resourceful and clever which allows him to survive.

Matthew Broderick became one of the most charming movie stars of the ’80s thanks to his starring role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He has that quality of someone who would look out for others even if he might not be the most powerful of people.

1 Katniss – Molly Ringwald

Jennifer Lawrence began her rise to superstardom with her intense and inspiring role as Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a struggling young woman providing for her family who volunteers to take her sister’s place in the games. Gradually she changes from an overlooked child to a symbol of rebellion.

It would make sense that one of the biggest stars of the ’80s would be cast in such a big role as this. Molly Ringwald is known for her iconic roles in many John Hughes films in which she showcased that quality of an overlooked young woman who begins to stand out when it matters.
