RHOC Kelly Dodd Speaks Out About Her ‘Stupid’ Coronavirus Comments

Kelly Dodd has been under fire for a good part of 2020 due to her controversial comments on the ongoing pandemic. However, her mother recently contracted COVID-19 and now The Real Housewives of Orange County star is taking time to address how “stupid” her earlier remarks were. The criticism first began earlier this year when Kelly offended many of her fans after she went on a tirade against the pandemic and compared the virus to the flu. “Do you know how many people died from the H1N1, the swine flu or SARS,” she told a follower. “It’s 25% get your facts straight you only hearing numbers not the reality! It’s God’s way of thinning the herd!”

By the summer, she received more criticism after she claimed the pandemic was over. While celebrating her bachelorette party ahead of her wedding to Fox News commentator Rick Levanthal, she shared a photo wearing a hat that read ‘Drunk Wives Matter’ that sparked a fierce backlash. Though she apologized for that incident, she never seemed apologetic about her coronavirus comments until more recently.

After her brother revealed that their mother was in ICU battling the virus, he added hashtags seemingly shading his sister and advocating for wearing a mask. However, shortly after that, Kelly responded by making a joke about the effectiveness of face masks. During a December 2 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she addressed her statements about the pandemic saying she “regrets” her comments that coronavirus was “God’s way of thinning the herd.” She went on to explain where her head was at in that moment. “At the time, it was a question – like, ‘Why are all these people dying? … Why [do] pandemics happen like this? Is it God’s way of thinning the herd,’” she explained, as noted by PEOPLE.

However, she went on to admit how foolish the sentiment was before finally offering a seemingly sincere apology. “It was a stupid thing for me to say,” she admitted. “It was insensitive and I apologize if I hurt or offended anybody, ’cause that wasn’t really my intention. I got freaked out about it and in hindsight, it was the stupidest thing I’ve ever said.” She also acknowledged how “misinformed” she was when making the bold statements. “You guys have to realize this was back in January when this happened and I was misinformed,” the Bravo star said before stressing the importance of following guidelines and restrictions. “I’m claustrophobic and I can’t stand wearing a mask –and now I understand the science behind it and I am ready, willing and able to wear a mask,” she declared. After sharing her complete change in tune, she touched on how vital this time is.

“And I know it’s important, because I don’t want to get sick and I don’t want to get others sick. I’m just a human being; I make mistakes,” Kelly said. She also gave an update on her estranged mother who she says “is doing fine. She’s at home.” Nice to see Kelly finally coming around just before the year ends.
