Rick And Morty 10 Things You Didnt Know About Squanchy

The zany sci-fi comedy Rick and Morty has quite the lineup of colorful, wacky, and generally oddball characters. Being a show that spans multiple galaxies and dimensions, the potential for strange aliens and otherworldly beings is endless. One of the most peculiar characters has to be the cat-like creature named Squanchy. Despite only appearing in a few episodes thus far, this furry friend of Rick’s has quickly made a name for himself with his unique “squanchy” dialect and his amusing influences. As you might expect from an alcohol-loving cat creature that seems to have a constant case of “bed head,” there are plenty of interesting tidbits regarding Squanchy.

So let’s get ready to have a squanchy time as we look at 10 largely unknown and obscure details about this anthropomorphic cat.

10 The Dangerous Growth Of His Home Planet

The homeland of this unkempt cat, fittingly named “Planet Squanch,” may have looked majestic when we paid it a visit in the season 2 finale. Yet, apparently this colorful foreign land is a bit more dangerous than its appearance lets on.

As it happens, this entire planet’s ground is covered with a blood-red grass, and is also home to a native plant called “suckulents.” Apparently, this will suck out a person’s blood in a matter of mere seconds if an unsuspecting victim draws near.

9 “Squanch” Is Spoken 21 Times In Squanchy’s Featured Episode

As fans of animation classics are likely aware, Squanchy and his species’ habit of swapping out the subject of a sentence with the word “squash” is a spoof of the Smurfs cartoon. These little blue creatures possessed a similar dialect in which they frequently tossed in the word “smurf.”

What might not be known is just how far Roiland and Harmon go in the episode “The Wedding Squanchers” in terms of driving home this parody. In fact, the word “squanch” is spoken a whopping 21 times in the episode. This includes a single sentence in which the word is used 3 times, with the quote – “in the name of the squanch, the six rivers, the four squanches, and the nine balls, I unite these two organisms in eternal squanch.”

8 A Brief Cameo In Season 4

Though it appears Rick’s squanchiest friend likely didn’t survive the firefight with the Galactic Federation at the end of season 2, we at least get to see a brief cameo of the monstrous version of this character.

Among the quick glimpses of Rick’s possible deaths while harvesting death crystals is a flash of super-Squanchy himself. This would seem to indicate that Rick’s friend is indeed still alive, considering these are glances at potential future events. Still, we haven’t seen any sign of him for the duration of season 3 and all of season 4 – this easter egg cameo notwithstanding. This may be for the best, given the eyebrow-raising image shown in the crystal.

7 A Peeping Squanchy Appears In A Rick And Morty Comic

If you can’t seem to get enough Rick and Morty, there does exist a comic series that offers dozens of supplementary stories, funny gags, and more world-building.

Along with a number of other characters, Squanchy makes yet another subtle, swift appearance in the 5th issue. It features Morty going to a summer camp which he claims to “go to every year but never uh… talks about.” One of the first scenes includes a jaunty camp tune seemingly meant to spoof Meatballs. In it, we see a cell of Squanchy peeping on a teenage couple making out, and looking a bit too uncomfortably pleased while doing so.

6 Inspired By Another Adult Swim Character

Though its dialect is clearly meant to be a Smurfs satire, it seems likely that this cat creature is a direct parody of another, more obscure Adult Swim character in terms of his design.

Frequent late-night viewers of Adult Swim may remember a particularly odd, somewhat depraved parody of a sitcom introduction called Too Many Cooks. One of the unfortunate victims of a murderer on that live-action short was a stuffed cat named Smarf. This anthropomorphic cat creature sports a similar look and color scheme, along with comparatively rugged fur. The Too Many Cooks character was, in turn, seemingly a nod to Snarf from the 80s cartoon ThunderCats, which likely explains Squanchy’s unique superhero ability.

5 Wedding Squanchers Was Almost A Two-Parter

The season 2 finale, for as grandiose as it was, was close to being dialed up in scope even more. The episode was actually going to a 2-episode epic that covered both the wedding and Rick’s escape from prison. Yet, given the abundance of chaotic events that needed to be covered, the showrunners felt it best to cut it short and insert some of the remainder in the season 3 opener.

This opened up a free slot for the end of season 2, which was filled in by Dan Harmon who conceptualized “Look Who’s Purging Now” in under a day.

4 Played In A Band With Rick

You may have noticed that Rick shares a closer relationship with his pals Birdperson and Squanchy than most of the various characters in the show. There’s a reason behind this – and it can be traced back to a band which they had played in as a trio.

This is never directly spoken of, though it’s subtly alluded to in the episode “Get Schwifty,” which shows a photograph kept by Birdperson which shows the three of them rocking out. It features Squanchy manning the drums, with a bass drum that displays the rather… interesting name of their group.

3 May Have Been Captured By The Galactic Federation

Given the chaotic, abrupt way things ended on Planet Squanch, with Squanchy getting roided-up to his green potion, questions regarding his whereabouts quickly arose. Though many have written him off as being one of the unfortunate casualties of the Galactic Federation, some have speculated that he may have survived.

Some have gone as far as to say his beast form was enough to stave off the troops, who had to bust out the big guns against this hulking cat creature. But many, including at least one youtube content creator, has theorized that perhaps he had been captured by the Federation and tortured in order to give up Rick’s location.

2 A Potential Skylanders Reference

As it happens, there’s seemingly yet another reference involved with Squanchy’s peculiar traits. Though his monster state is likely partly a ThunderCats reference, his need to throw back a green liquid to trigger this seems to be a subtle nod to the Skylanders character named Pop Fizz.

Like Squanchy, this gremlin alchemist consumes and throws various potions – including a green one – to unleash different powers and attacks. One potion even similarly provides him with a “Beast Form.”

1 We Almost Got A Squanchy And Planet Squanch-Centered Episode

“The Wedding Squanchers,” as it turns out, had undergone various changes at least on a conceptual and writing level. The showrunners explained in a DVD commentary to this season 2 finale that at one point, the episode took a very different form.

They had wanted to center an entire episode around Planet Squanch and in part, its lead character too. Supposedly, this romp was going to have Summer getting into a relationship on the planet, while Jerry was going to run for mayor or something of the like. Why not? A remnant of this unused script exists in the form of Beth saying “I squanch my family.” It certainly could have been amusing, though the constant insertions of the word “squanch” may have grown a bit repetitive…
