Rick And Morty How To Make Szechuan Sauce

Rick And Morty made it into a cult phenomenon but it’s not easy to get hold of, so here’s a recipe to make some Szechuan sauce. It was a long wait between season 2 and season 3 of Rick And Morty, with the second season ending on a huge cliffhanger. Season 3 opener “The Rickshank Rickdemption” proved to be worth the wait, with Rick breaking out of Galactic Federation custody and destroying the Citadel of Ricks in typically elaborate – and gory – fashion.

This Rick And Morty episode was packed with great jokes and visuals, but one element that caught on fast was Rick’s obsession with McDonald’s Szechuan sauce. This sauce was a real-life promotion tie-in with animated movie Mulan and was discontinued shortly after. In “The Rickshank Rickdemption” the troubled genius makes use of his imprisonment in a brain-link simulation to go to McDonald’s and get some. Even his Galactic Federation captor Cornvelious Daniel comments on how amazing the sauce is.

Shortly after the episode aired, a cult fandom soon appeared around Szechuan sauce itself, with McDonald’s prepping a jug and sending it to Rick And Morty co-creator and star Justin Roiland. McDonald’s later confirmed that due to high demand they were bringing the sauce back for one day, but due to the sauce only being available at select locations and in very limited quantity, this led to chaos and protests at some restaurants. The company later brought the sauce back again in early 2018, supplying over 20 million cups to a wider range of restaurants.

Even then, some customers had trouble getting hold of the coveted condiment. It appears the Szechuan sauce has now been discontinued from McDonald’s, and outside of packets being sold for ludicrous sums on eBay, it can’t be found elsewhere. Of course, while this might be disappointing news to some Rick And Morty fans, that doesn’t have to stop them making their own version of it.

One popular copycat Szechuan sauce recipe was provided by Reddit user Xeropoint. It’s important to note this isn’t an exact replica of the McDonald’s recipe, but it still results in a delicious sauce. The key ingredients are below.

Mince 6 cloves of Garlic and sweat (heat them up in a skillet)

Add 4 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar

Add soy sauce to taste (DO NOT USE LOW SODIUM SAUCE)

Add 2 tablespoon Plum Sake (Drink additional 3 oz Plum Sake)

Reduce sauce slightly (Drink additional 1.5 oz Plum Sake)

3 1/2 tablespoons cock sauce (Sriracha)

Add 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Red pepper flakes to taste

Minced Ginger to taste

Consume remaining Plum Sake

Simmer for five minutes and stir constantly over medium heat. Some experimentation is encouraged with this recipe to figure out the right balance of ingredients. Maybe for the authentic feel, pick up some Chicken McNuggets and see if Rick was right to be so obsessed over a promotional tie-in sauce. Rick And Morty aside, it really is a tasty sauce, so for anyone who might be curious and has the ingredients laying around, it could be worth a try.
