Adult Swim has released a bloody new Samurai & Shogun short featuring characters from Rick and Morty. An Adult Swim staple since its premiere in 2013, Rick and Morty follows the interdimensional adventures of boozing genius Rick Sanchez and his anxious grandson Morty. With Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon at the helm, Rick and Morty combines Adult Swim’s brand of anarchic chaos with genuine moments of pathos, as well as a healthy dose of belching. The genre-bending, off-kilter series has become a cash cow for the network, spawning video games, comics, shorts, and merchandise.

Following a well-received first, second, and third season, Adult Swim announced a long-term deal with the creators in 2018, ordering 70 new episodes and an unspecified amount of seasons. With their newfound creative stability, Roiland and Harmon split season 4 into two parts, with the season concluding in May 2020. Following COVID-related delays, the show’s fifth season aired from June 2021 until September. The network has confirmed Rick and Morty season 6 for 2022.

Ahead of the season 6 premiere next year, Adult Swim has released a short titled Samurai & Shogun Part 2 as part of the Adult Swim Festival 2021. The first installment dropped in March of 2020 and first introduced fans to the portal-hopping duo reimagined as Samurai Rick and Shogun Morty. Featuring Japanese dialogue with English subtitles, the shorts blend the characters and plot info of Rick and Morty with the gory stylization of samurai anime. Part 2’s synopsis reads, “Paying homage to the classic tale Lone Wolf and Cub, Samurai Rick defends Shogun Morty against all comers. In part one, we learned that Rick WTM-72 is not to be underestimated. In the finale, his savagery knows no limit!” Watch Samurai & Shogun Part 2 below.

Like Samurai & Shogun Part 1, Part 2 is written and directed by Kaichi Sato, with Keisuke Chiba voicing Shogun Morty and Yohei Tadano voicing Samurai Rick, otherwise known as Rick WTM-72. The short riffs on the series’ use of multiple dimensions, with Rick facing off against other warrior Ricks. Part 2 also introduces more characters and themes from Rick and Morty, including the appearance of Summer. Though she tries to fight her sword-wielding grandpa, Rick won’t participate: “I kill none but Rick. Get lost.” Part 2 is perhaps even bloodier than the first installment, with Samurai Rick committing seppuku (with a twist).

Sato isn’t the first director to dabble in anime-inspired Rick and Morty shorts. Following Samurai & Shogun, a short titled Rick and Morty vs. Genocider was released later that year. A third, Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), was uploaded to YouTube and aired on Adult Swim in August. The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara serves as Rick and Morty’s most recent Halloween special, combining nods to anime and manga with plenty of horror film references. Fans can only assume that the Rick and Morty anime shorts will become a common fixture in the show’s lucrative media empire, especially as they neatly fit into the Toonami programming block.
