Riverdale: 10 Things That Went Wrong For Jughead Once He Started Dating Betty

Jughead dating Betty created one of the most beloved couples on Riverdale. However, it actually led to some bad things for Jughead’s life.

Throughout the Riverdale series, many viewers have been cheering on Jughead Jones, played by Cole Sprouse, while he navigates his relationship with Betty Cooper, played by Lili Reinhart. They’ve even coined the term “Bughead” in support of the character pairing; however, not everyone was thrilled about the two lovebirds. Characters in the show made life more difficult for Jughead because of who he chose to be with.

Whether it was in direct correlation with his relationship or merely a coincidence of the Riverdale timeline, life hasn’t always been easy for Jughead, and there are definitely instances where things got more complicated after falling in love with the girl from the other side of the tracks.

10 The Southside Serpents Questioning His Motives

The division of Riverdale is quite literally, which side of the train tracks the populace lives on. This geographical proximity determines where your loyalties lie. For example, if you live on the Southside of Riverdale, you are most likely loyal to the Southside Serpents; however, if you’re North of the tracks, then you live a life of prejudice toward the Southside Serpents, at least that’s how the characters make like out to be.

So when Jughead, son of FP Jones, leader of the Southside Serpents gang, decides to go steady with Betty Cooper, Alice’s daughter and assumed Southside Serpent antagonist, the gang questions Jughead’s loyalty and credibility as a Serpent. It isn’t until Jug proclaims himself a leader to the gang (something he was not willing to do originally) that they start to soften up on him and his relationship.

9 The Couple’s Parents Not Approving

Jughead and Betty’s relationship was not only met with hesitation by the Southside Serpents, but also FP Jones and Alice Smith (Cooper) showed blatant disapproval for the star-crossed duo. It seemed as if the teenagers were born into rival families and that because of this, the parents would refuse to support their relationship.

This definitely made the start of teens’ relationship tumultuous, until they found out that their parents were also an item in high school. After this, FP and Alice came around to the idea of the two dating.

8 His Mother Disappointed Him

Speaking of parent drama, the whole situation with Jughead’s mother, Gladys Jones, was a negative turning point for Jughead. Since his mom had abandoned the family, Jughead held his mother in a certain, nearly rose-tinted, light; so, Betty and Jughead searched for her. However, when Jughead was reacquainted, his hopes of having a united family quickly diminished alongside his regard for his mother.

Not only was Gladys not as motherly as audiences hoped for Jughead, but she was also self-serving and incredibly selfish with her love. This was quite the letdown for Jughead.

7 Betty’s Mom Not Letting Go Of Jughead’s Upbringing

Betty’s mom, Alice was determined to talk down to Jughead to her daughter, despite the teenagers already making their minds up about each other.

Whether this is because Alice Smith didn’t want her daughter affiliated with a gang, or because she was projecting her own feelings out onto Betty, it definitely hurt Jughead’s self-esteem at the beginning of his relationship with Betty Cooper.

6 He Was Pulled Into The Half-Brother Drama

Family drama is ever-present in Riverdale, but things definitely got more stressful for Jughead and Betty when they discovered that Betty had a half-brother. It was amplified when it was discovered that this was guy pretending to be a sibling and was actually a fake.

The drama involving this character and some of the lies he told, as well as the terrible things he did, were often too much for Jughead on top of his own drama.

5 The Complicated Power Dynamic Of The Snake Charmer

The Snake Charmer is a lawful neutral character that emerges when Jughead finally decides to follow in his father’s footsteps as leader of the Southside gang. When a stroke of bad blood passes between the two opposing forces fighting for leadership and control of the Southside Serpents, The Snake Charmer decides to use Jughead’s weakness against him: his love for Betty Cooper.

In a desperate hope to shield his girlfriend from the toxicity, Jughead sacrifices himself to The Snake Charmer via gang violence that nearly kills him.

4 Betty’s Surprise Birthday Party

This went south for Jughead Jones because he realized that Betty went against his wishes. While Betty decided to throw her new boyfriend a birthday party out of the goodness of her heart (and to also make Jughead acknowledge that he’s special to her), she did it even when he told her not to.

In the end, Jughead second-guessed how well Betty actually cared for him if she would blatantly disregard his feelings like that.

3 His Relationship With Archie Suffered

Archie was not too keen on the idea of Jughead going steady with Betty Cooper, his next-door neighbor. Whether this was because Archie had lingering feelings for Betty or that Jughead broke the friend code, the friendship between the two teens was strained.

While Jughead could probably have seen this coming when Archie found out, it still goes to show that not only were Betty and Jug’s parents not very accepting of the match, but childhood friend Archie Andrews was rather put off by it at first too.

2 He Was Transferred To Southside High

One could say things went south for Jughead Jones when he had to transfer to Southside High School. This school was the polar opposite of what Jughead was used to at Riverdale High; it was chaotic, disorganized, and underfunded in comparison.

The opportunities Jughead had at Riverdale High were not as readily accessible at Southside High, and the students seemed to have made it their goal to try and convert him to become a full-fledged member of the Southside Serpents.

1 The Bughead Breakups

Throughout the relationship that Jughead and Betty share, there are quite a few breaks ups to be had. This tumultuous pairing is tested at several points where Jughead and Betty are forced to break up with each other.

Jughead rides the highs of the relationship and levels with the lows, as the on-again-off-again couple continues to air dirty laundry, conflict with each other’s perspectives, and deal with both normal and atypical teenage drama.
