Villains are the characters fans love to hate on TV shows. Some villains, however, are more likable than others. Think Dexter Morgan from Dexter, for example, or Walter White from Breaking Bad.

When it comes to Riverdale, there are some villains – like Hal Cooper – who are just plain evil. And there are others who are pretty awesome in their own right, for a variety of reasons. In some cases, they aren’t “villains” in the traditional sense, but have done some pretty terrible things.

Conversely, while the hope is that the hero will always come out on top, sometimes, heroes are actually the unlikable ones. Again, Riverdale sees a lot of this with heroes who fans aren’t quite completely behind.

10 Villain They Loved: Cheryl Blossom

Cheryl comes across as inherently mean yet she has shown that she really does care about the people who are important to her – she just has a funny way of showing it. Nonetheless, she constantly insults her River Vixens cheerleaders, pokes fun at the people she calls friends, and has done ruthless and terrible things to her own family members.

Yet somehow, fans still feel connected to Cheryl and love everything about her character. She comes across as both strong and vulnerable at the same time. Plus, there’s no denying that she’s wildly entertaining, witty, and resourceful.

9 Hero Fans Hated: Archie Andrews

Despite the show’s best efforts, Archie continues to come across as needy and as though he has a hero complex. It’s great that he doesn’t hesitate to go to great lengths to help people. But sometimes, he goes too far and thinks he truly is a superhero. In fact, several episodes even positioned him as a neighborhood superhero who came out at night and tried to clean up the streets.

His rugged good looks, killer abs, welcoming smile, and lovely attitude are difficult to deny. Still, fans weren’t always on board with Archie, even if he is without a doubt the most heroic character on the series.

8 Villain They Loved: Hermione Lodge

Hermione was the bright spot in the Lodge family, an older, wiser version of Veronica who, much like her daughter’s path in the time jump, fell for a dapper, successful man only to get caught up in his manipulations.

She took a job as mayor then used her power to do Hiram’s bidding. She tried to kill her husband, had an affair, and did some pretty heinous things to the people of Riverdale. Yet fans couldn’t help but root for her and felt that if she could just get out from under Hiram’s hold, she would live up to her full potential.

7 Hero Fans Hated: Charles

Charles wasn’t technically a hero the entire time: he turned out to be a terrifying serial killer. But in the beginning, he swept in and helped Betty solve crimes and figure out what was going on.

But even when he was the hero, fans detected that there was something off about Charles. And when he visited Chic in jail and it was revealed that they were in a relationship all along, it became even more apparent that Charles was not the hero he purported to be.

6 Villain They Loved: Hiram Lodge

Hiram Lodge is arguably the biggest and longest-running villain in the series. Even when it seems he has turned a corner, even when he was clearly ill, he could not help but return to his villainous ways.

And while fans wish he would just leave Riverdale in peace, without Hiram, the stories would not be as interesting. Fans need Hiram’s evil doings and selfish ways. They give the characters purpose and drive to fight for what they believe in and stop him in his tracks. Plus, the push and pull relationship between Hiram and his daughter Veronica is always entertaining, even if it shows how terrible of a parent he is as well.

5 Hero Fans Hated: Reggie Mantle

Reggie was a hero who stepped in and stepped up to help Veronica when she needed it. It did have a little to do with the fact that he had a thing for her and they sparked up a romantic relationship eventually. He was also a hero when he finally stood up to his abusive father.

With that said, Reggie was always an unlikeable character, a young man with a chip on his shoulder who seemed jealous of Archie, especially when it came to football. When he turned the corner and started working for Hiram after the time jump, his hero status dropped dramatically.

4 Villain They Loved: FP Jones

FP has one of the greatest character redemption stories in the series. He began as a villain, a seemingly absent father whose teenage son was essentially living at the drive-in movie theater where he worked. He was a violent alcoholic who committed crimes and had a bad reputation.

But he slowly but surely turned things around. He made up with his son, cleaned up his act, and even took a job at the diner to make ends meet and show that he could be responsible. He never lost sight of who he was or where he came from, and fans couldn’t help but love his rebellious nature.

3 Hero Fans Hated: Kevin Keller

Fans really wanted to like Kevin. He was a great best friend to Betty, a shoulder to cry one when she needed one. But he had so many missteps through the series. One of the worst was getting caught up with a cult and donating his organ after being brainwashed.

Kevin has a lot of personal demons to overcome, and while there’s nothing inherently unlikable about him, he wasn’t a favorite among the many heroes on the show.

2 Villain They Loved: Ethel Muggs

Ethel was the unlikeliest character to become a villain, but she eventually did just that. Once she got caught up with the Gryphons and Gargoyles game, she began to act erratically and made some dangerous moves that ended up causing harm to a lot of people.

Despite that, a lot of fans related to Ethel as the high school student who didn’t quite fit in. She wasn’t popular and often went unnoticed by the popular kids. Yet when they got to know her, they realized that she had a lot of great qualities.

1 Hero Fans Hated: Mary Andrews

Mary Andrews really stepped up for Archie once his dad and her ex-husband Fred died. She returned home to Riverdale to live with him and put her career aspirations on hold. Still, despite the fact that Mary is arguably the smartest among all of the parents, fans could not reconcile the fact that the storyline suggested she left Riverdale to pursue her career as a lawyer following her divorce.

Fred and Archie refused to leave Riverdale, so Mary simply left her son when he was about 14 years old. She did try to get him to go with her, but he chose to stay with his father. Even so, it doesn’t sit well with fans that a parent would leave her child during some of the most important years of his life: high school.
