Titular character of the Archie Comics and in-house superhero of CW’s Riverdale, Archie Andrews is a character whose story arc gripped fans from the get-go. It doesn’t hurt that the TV Archie is also extremely handsome, with his flaming mane and boyish good looks. All in all, KJ Apa’s depiction of Archie is a delight to watch, but the good guy of Riverdale has had quite a journey on the show, emotionally and physically.

Archie started off as a regular high schooler, living in a small town where his best friend Betty Cooper was in love with him, but as the show took the sinister turns it is so well-known for, he had to grow up pretty quickly and adapt to the warzone that his home had become. His emotional journey manifested in his looks through the five seasons that audiences have watched so far, and he looked pretty different, in a good way, by the time the show leaped forward in time.

Archie started off with a leaner physique in the first season of Riverdale. He was about 16 or 17 years old, and a young high school kid who hadn’t seen how terrible his little town could become yet. His boyish look reflected the innocence that he still had.

His clothes were also not as refined as they became later — as is the case with any schoolboy, he just starting to venture into more adult clothing, like this blazer and jeans combo.

Somewhere through the middle of the first season, Archie’s extremely unruly hair became slightly less so, although his tryst with extremely formal clothing was far from over. He was an innately good boy, and for his first public musical performance, he characteristically chose a formal button-down with a tie.

Fans got a glimpse into the vintage Archie aesthetic in this season too, in Jughead’s 1950’s dream sequence where Archie was styled more like the comics. The neatly backcombed hair with a jumper and plaid pants wasn’t a constant look, but worth mentioning.

After witnessing the murder of Jason Blossom on tape, experiencing the pain of his best friend Jughead’s fractured home life, and most importantly his own father getting shot, Archie was no longer just another high schooler.

He had seen the darker side of life, and this was slowly showing in his physical appearance. He was acting like a vigilante, full of anger about his father and the Black Hood terrorizing the town. He was beefier than the previous season, and he had developed a signature style that involved henleys, hoodies, and cardigans with jeans.

The second season of Riverdale was when Archie’s shirtless looks began in earnest. His growing muscles were shown off a lot in this season, beginning with his foray into wrestling in Riverdale High. He was also working out a lot to run the Red Circle, running perimeters of the town to keep it safe.

The wrestling was foreshadowing his future career in boxing, and Archie was become harder, tougher, and had more of an edge to him than he did in the freshman season of the show.

6 Season 3

Perhaps the roughest season for the resident redhead in this messed up town, Riverdale’s third season had him change most radically in appearance. FP tattooed him with the Serpents mark before he was sent to jail on a false murder charge by Hiram Lodge, and he was more tan and slightly… grimier through the whole season.

His sunburnt look was complemented by shorter hair, which had somehow become a more gingery red than his original deep red. The protagonist was also wearing simpler V-neck t-shirts, vests, and fewer layers. It did seem like Riverdale had warmer weather in season 3.

Archie was even more buff in this season, if fans could believe it. He was mauled by a bear while on the run from the cops, which he miraculously survived. It did leave a scar on him, and he was also boxing now, which presented more shirtless moments in boxing gear.

What took a turn, thankfully, was Archie’s choice of formal wear. Gone were the dorky jacket and jeans, replaced by a sharp suit and bowtie which he wore to his court hearing. It’s easy to see that Veronica was influencing his fashion sense for the better.

4 Season 4

Now the owner of the El Royale Boxing Club, Archie was seen in the customized tee shirts, vests, and sweatshirts from the gym a fair bit. His hair was cropped shorter, and his shirt often went missing altogether.

Season 4 had a car wash sequence at the beginning, where the men of Riverdale, including Archie, were the means to raise some cash for the renovations needed at his gym. Overall, Archie was looking a lot more mature in this season.

3 Season 4

Archiekins is no stranger to novelty costumes, and the show often puts him in clothing that is an ode to the original comics. In the only Halloween episode of the entire series, the now high school senior appears in the costume of Pureheart the Powerful, replete with spandex, cape, underwear over pants, and that Elvis-style belt.

He also had to kick Dodger out of the Halloween event, superhero style, so this costume clearly worked in more ways than one. This season is the last audiences get to see of Archie as a student.

2 Season 5

The seven-year time jump that the show pulled was only kind to the heroic Archie. At the end of the previous season, he was seen leaving to join the Army, and Season 5 showed him as a well-respected Sergeant. He returned to Riverdale in full uniform looking absolutely dapper, with the intention of hiring for the RROTC.

He met some of his old friends and managed to rope the others into the attempt to save his crumbling town from the grips of the nefarious Hiram Lodge.

1 Season 5

Archie’s maturity manifested in his appearance perfectly in the latest season of Riverdale. Although he got up to his usual tricks of saving the school, volunteering in clubs, and being the superhero, his age and confidence came through in his physique.

He had graduated from the t-shirts and jeans of his student years to sophisticated jumpers, and fans loved the super-short haircut, a result of his Army occupation, which made him look sharper than he ever had before.
