Riverdale is indeed based on the Archie Comics series but the show made many major changes to the characters. Some of them are way different.

Turning famous comic books into television shows isn’t a new concept. Its often seen with superheroes, the MCU, DCEU, and even The Chilling Adventure of Sabrina. The famed comic book series, Archie comics from 1942, got a makeover in 2017 in a teen drama television show, Riverdale.
Many fans can recall the red-headed character and his group of friends from the printed comics that littered newsstands and supermarkets. The teen drama would have a much darker, spooky, and adult version of the popular characters. Some characters went through a major story change and might not be as reminiscent of the childhood comics.
10 Fred Andrews
Fred Andrews was played by the late Luke Perry in the show. His overall character mimicked the comic version well. He was just as lovable, nice, and caring. As a parent, he also had a deep bond with his son. Much like the comics, he married his high school sweetheart but the show has them separated after some time.
One of the major differences between both versions is physicality. Luke Perry’s version is much more traditionally dazzling to the eye. The comic version was slightly overweight and balding but had a soft heart. The show gives the character a bit more of an edge when it comes to the hidden issues of Riverdale.
9 FP Jones
The comic character FP Jones got a serious makeover in Riverdale. In the comics, he makes small appearances and is nothing like his show counterpart. Jones often wears a knit sweater with a dress shirt, He’s lanky, comical, and sports a funny mustache.
Instead of the dorky character, fans got actor Skeet Ulrich. The brooding bad boy, tough as nails former leader of the Southside Serpents was adorned in a leather jacket and slicked-back hair. The show Jones was once framed for murder and sent to prison. The character completely blows the comic book version out of the water.
8 Josie McCoy
Fans often remember the character because of her band, Josie and the Pussycats. Josie (Ashleigh Murray) was a main character in the show and could come off a bit standoffish and judgmental, especially when it came to her music. She’s sweet and protects the people she cares about but also struggles. She seeks her father’s approval in her pursuit of music.
The comic version had a noticeable difference. Many described the comic Josie as being the female version of Archie. In both versions, she and Archie have a sort of bond over music. The comic Josie is just as ambitious and driven in becoming a big star.
7 Kevin Keller
Fans of the original comics may not remember a character named Kevin Keller. That’s because he wasn’t introduced until 2010 in Veronica #202. He became the comics’ first openly gay character. At the beginning of his storyline, Veronica shows interest in dating him but he dismissed her advances. He confides in Jughead of his sexuality.
The show version is a bit more complex. He’s best friends with Betty (Lili Reinhart) and becomes friends with Veronica (Camila Mendes) as well. But Kevin (Casey Cott) often struggled with his sexuality. He does have romantic partners but one partner refused to become public over possible scrutiny. The comic version also has Kevin as a bright blonde.
6 Reggie Mantle
An aspect of the comic character, Reggie Mantle that stayed in the show was his big-headed ego. Reggie liked to think of himself as the “it” guy of school. He and Archie have a frenemies relationship. The show still kept in tune with the comics. He’s a talented athlete, a huge prankster, and thinks highly of himself.
But the show made the character dark in some ways. It’s revealed that Reggie (Charles Melton) also worked on the side as a drug dealer. He also starts a romantic relationship with Veronica at one point. Above all, this show version had a deep hatred for Southsiders and didn’t mind a good fight. The show also revealed that Reggie had an abusive father, which molded some of who he is.
5 Cheryl Blossom
The show version of Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is not someone to think of lightly. But the comic version is more light and not as drastic. She still the Queen Bee but is also Archie’s third love interest. Much like the show, she also has a twin brother and flaming red hair.
But the show kicks it up a notch. She’s often revered and maybe feared when she’s first introduced. She has deep psychological issues after the death of her brother. In the beginning, she was cold and manipulative but turns a new leaf and somewhat becomes friends with the main characters. This Cheryl has darkness and at one point joins the Southside Serpents.
4 Veronica Lodge
One of the main characters of the show and comics is Veronica Lodge. In terms of physicality, the show version doesn’t stray far from the comics. She’s pretty, well-liked, and has dark hair. Both versions can also be very snotty at times having lived her whole life in wealth and privilege.
She’s also one of Archie’s main love interests. But the show version is much tougher. She is a spitfire and does what she must to get her way and some answers. This version also has a dark family secret and she pushed her way to become more involved in her father’s business. Hoping to fix his wrongdoings, Veronica took charge of stopping the monopolization of the Southside.
3 Betty Cooper
Alongside Veronica Lodge in the comics was Betty Cooper as Archie’s other love interest. In the show, it starts that way but it soon fizzled out. Much of Betty’s characteristics stayed somewhat the same. She’s highly intelligent, well-read, kind, and hopes to become a journalist.
The show made her storyline a bit darker to match the series’ overall genre. Betty would do anything to uncover the truth. Unlike the comics, she has a romantic relationship with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and becomes Queen of the Southside Serpents. The show also has her involved in a twisted storyline of Black Hood attacks and became an FBI agent in a time jump.
2 Jughead Jones
Out of all the original comic characters, Jughead got the biggest change of them all. The comic book version is almost nothing like the show. The only thing that was kept relatively the same was his iconic hat and his dark hair. The comic Jughead is a bit of a goof, not as smart, and is in love with food.
The show made Jughead cool, suave, and dangerous. He’s much more intelligent and comes from a difficult background. His father was the leader of the Southside Serpents and at one point in the show, Jughead even becomes their leader. Jughead also served as the show’s official narrator as he was writing a book about the darkness of Riverdale.
1 Archie Andrews
Archie’s bright hair can be spotted from a mile away. It was his trademark in the show and comics. Both versions differ in many ways. Comic and show Archie (KJ Apa) is the top guy of Riverdale High and a good athlete who is charming and suave. But the show first introduces Archie as having a relationship with a teacher.
The show did keep true to the love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica for some time. Archie from the show was more geared towards his music. A major difference is his overall storyline path. Archie gets involved in the dark underbelly of Riverdale and its many secrets.
