Rob Zombie’s Munsters set photos show off the construction on the movie house’s exterior. The director and heavy metal musician confirmed earlier this year that he was working on an adaptation of the classic TV series, which ran for two seasons from 1964-66. The Munsters film has no release date as of yet, but will release both theatrically and on Peacock.

The original sitcom presented a satirical take on American suburban life through its family of friendly monsters living in the otherwise normal town of Mockingbird Heights. With costumes inspired by Universal’s classic monster movies, The Munsters starred Fred Gwynne as Frankenstein’s monster Herman, Yvonne de Carlo as his vampire wife Lily, and Al Lewis as her Dracula-esque father, Grandpa. Butch Patrick played the couple’s werewolf son, Eddie, while the role of their non-monstrous niece Marilyn was primarily performed by Pat Priest, who replaced Beverly Owen after 13 episodes.

Zombie has been sharing updates on his Munsters project on social media, and his latest post shows off the progress on the exterior of the central family’s home at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. In his caption, the director marvels at how much detailing was done just seven days since his previous photo, but admits that there’s a lot still left to do. The crew is recreating an entire neighborhood in Budapest, Hungary for the film, and as Zombie says, that takes some serious work:

Zombie also includes pictures of the other houses on Mockingbird Lane, which are painted pleasant colors and significantly contrast the design of the Munsters’ haunted-looking home. He and his team are having to reconstruct the location in part because the original, an exterior set on the Universal Studios lot known as the Munster Mansion, has since been used in many other shows and movies. It underwent some serious remodeling for its most recent appearance in Desperate Housewives, where its address became 4351 Wisteria Lane.

A key element of The Munsters’ humor came from the fact that the central characters, who stuck out of their neighborhood like a sore thumb, considered themselves a normal American family, and these set photos already express that sensibility. Though this is a self-identified passion project for the director, fans are curious to see what his adaptation will be like, considering the sitcom is a far cry from Zombie’s typical exploitation horror films. However, the Edward Scissorhands vibe of these set photos is reason to believe his Munsters movie won’t abandon the franchise’s family-friendly roots.
